I wrote to Tennesse Governor Haslam yesterday regarding #cyntoiabrown. Nobody picked up in the office but I am going to call again. But write and keep writing! Here is what I wrote and I don’t care if y’all use parts of it or the whole fucking thing. Just keep calling, writing and tweeting. Say her name: Dear Governor Haslam, I am writing to you today to implore you to grant clemency to Cyntoia Brown. A grave miscarriage of justice has gone on for far too long. This survivor of abuse and sex trafficking has been denied the resources to heal and access to rehabilitation. This was a child forced into sex work, unable to consent, who made the only choice she thought she had. And yet she has been shown no mercy, no relief and little compassion by a system that ignored her and allowed her to slip through the cracks. We know all too often that young black girls are not often allowed to be victims, we know that African American girls are disproportionately represented in the sex trafficking "trade" and yet they are also disproportionately punished instead of saved. In your next few weeks of office you cannot change many of those facts but what you can do is try to set straight an egregious mistake that was made. Pardon Ms. Brown, allow her the opportunity to not waste the rest of her life in prison and instead take advantage of the tremendous support networks this traumatizing event has made possible. She was a child, the life she had lived up until the point of her incarceration had been brief and painful, she has spent almost the same amount of time in prison. Let's restore her dignity, let's acknowledge her victimhood and let's allow her the right to be a productive survivor of those things. Let's do what is morally right. As a mama of 6 I have to be everything including a hair dresser. I get my own hair done by @locs_nyc_to_miami as an act of self care but she’s also been generous enough to teach me so much so I can adequately do my brood’s hair. I decided some time ago to invest in a salon dryer and that along with Tyra’s knowledge in oils and hair growth all of my kids have healthy long locs or soft luscious Afros. Thomas hated getting his hair done he loves how it looks after. This is What I do Ya'll: Meet Autumn Lewis, she is our Communications Manager and Special Events associate. In her time with the Black Feminist Project, she made the brave decision to go back to school and finish her degree. We are super proud of her and we are supporting her. One of the ways we're doing that is through professional development opportunities as well. Autumn, doesn't have formal training in this area but she has raw talent and we're gonna walk our talk and make sure she is equipped to go out in the world and THRIVE.
