“woodpecker” My name is Kenji Fukui, and I produced wooden lifestyle tools in Gifu City. Since my grandfather’s time, our family has been in the business of constructing and repairing Shinto and Buddhist ritual items, like portable shrine...s and family altars. It was during my time in that line of work that I came to realize how magnificent wood is as a raw material. Wood possesses a pleasant smell, is nice to touch, and with proper maintenance can be used over long periods of time. Owing to our many forests, wood is a plentiful resource here in Japan and our culture has been supported by it for quite a long time. Focusing more on those abundant resources, I think returning to a lifestyle where we interact more with wood on a daily basis is a positive step towards a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle. It was with a desire to share my appreciation of wood and its good qualities with more people that I decided to create “woodpecker”. Currently, “woodpecker” focuses mainly on the designing, creation, and distribution of wooden chopping boards, plates, wooden spoons and other such everyday household items. Today I would like to introduce a cutting board made from Ginkgo. Its distinctive features are as follows: First, it’s very soft, causing less wear to the blades of your kitchen knives, allowing you to use them for longer. Second, it’s very light and easy to deal with. Its high oil content also causes it to dry quickly after having been washed. Third, you’re able to repair it through shaving. The way it becomes as good as new every time you sharpen it is something particular to wooden cutting boards. And finally, it is made from biodegradable materials. Those are the things I think are best about Ginkgo cutting boards. In order to have these cutting boards be enjoyed by as many people as possible, we’ve created them in a variety of designs. From more orthodox, four-cornered cutting boards to more unique designs that make use of the wood’s grain. In order to make sure we have a cutting board that fits your kitchen, we have prepared a total of 17 different kinds, from big ones to ones so small they can fit in the palm of your hand, and even round or long ones that almost seem like they could be used instead of dishes or trays. And should they ever get dirty or scratched, they can always be shaven down and returned to a like-new state, allowing you to use it for a very long time. We have been told by people who have tried them for themselves that our cutting boards are so comfortable and easy to use that, after using it just once, they find it difficult to settle for anything else. It would be an honor if you would take one in hand, and experience its smooth touch and pleasant fragrance for yourself.
