Medina Spirit goes gate to wire in the G1 Kentucky Derby

Medina Spirit got lucky when Rock Your World got knocked back at the start & Midnight Bourbon wasn’t sent after dealing with a not so clean start himself - leaving only Soup and Sandwich to apply any pace pressure to the gutsy colt. As they hit the stretch, it looked for all the world like Mandaloun or even Hot Rod Charlie were going to reel Medina Spirit in, but just like he did in the Robert B Lewis - Medina Spirit refused to give up. Essential Quality put in a good run, but had to settle for fourth.

Medina Spirit can’t always catch a good horse in front of him, but when he gets the lead he is one horse who just refuses to give up.

And what a comeback by Mandaloun. His Louisiana Derby trouncing really was too bad to believe. He really lived up to his early hype today and showed he is one of the best colts running.

Hot Rod Charlie may not have gotten the win in this one, but he did manage to turn the tables on Essential Quality. What a great showing from the Louisiana horses this year.
