Season 2B currently airs in Germany and as I watch it I find one thing constantly upsetting and even dangerous for the young (target) audience, up to the point that I have to rant about it (sorry).
Maybe you’ve guessed it: it’s about our “beloved” triangle between Luna, Matteo and Simón.
At the beginning of 2B Luna is constantly torn between supporting Matteo or Simón in Vidia’s competition. Her friends bring this up multiple times and Luna herself expresses this dilemma on her own as well. And every time it happens, I just roll my eyes so hard at this writing, in fact at this whole arc.
It is entirely possible to support two people at the same time. (Hell, I’ve supported a team playing against my favorite soccer team that I’m a member of, when they played in the national tournament and somehow I managed to get by just fine, thanks) Teaching and showing kids the opposite is... just plain wrong and stupid in my eyes. If we look at it on a meta level, it’s even worse: a person shouldn’t have to constantly prioritize either their friendships or their relationship. Of course, there are sometimes specific situations where it’s necessary to do so, but it shouldn’t be an ongoing dilemma. Good, healthy friendships last through one person’s relationship. Good, healthy relationships last without abandoning friendships.
To think choosing one over the other is a sign of “loving” the choosen person “more” is misleading. Love can exist in many different ways in many different forms. Just because you have a boyfriend, doesn’t mean you don’t love your best friend anymore. Just because you’re happy for your best friend getting a big opportunity doesn’t mean you don’t care about your boyfriend (or his career).
I would have loved to see someone bringing up this question - “Do you support your boyfriend or your best friend? Who do you want to win?” - and Luna saying “Listen, I support both, I want both to win and I’m not going to choose between them. End of discussion.” Once again Disney wasted a chance to highlight a valueable lesson just for the sake of some more triangle drama.
Luna never makes a decision, instead looks for ways to weasle out of it when someone tries to get an answer. I totally understand her reaction and if it wasn’t for the gala, I’d be fine with it. But at the gala, a decision must be made and it’s Simón who takes action when he says he’ll look for another duet partner so she can sing with Matteo. (Which is really nice, I’m glad he got this development) Both him and Matteo show understanding for her situation and troubles - although Matteo is less consistent and confident in this. However, they both still stay passive throughout the arc when e.g. Jazmín bothers Luna with the “Boyfriend or best friend” question. Another wasted chance, Disney.
And of course, the competition ends with them both winning - maybe so again there’s no need for Luna to show support for both of them or maybe (as we saw) to continue the drama.
I’m so sick of this and it’s one of the reasons I’m considering to just give up on this season. To stop watching and go back to writing fanfiction where I own the power to avoid all the things I dislike about the show.
