The Slow Train to Thazi

Another day, another train. This time it's the "Slow Train to Thazi" - another recommendation from the man @seatsixtyone

Our taxi arrived on time, we were heading for the train station in Shwe Nyaung – just 8 km away from Nyaung Shwe on the shores of Inle Lake, to catch the first of two trains. With any luck our first train would get to Thazi on time and we’d catch a second train to Naypyidaw, Myanmar’s capital and get in by 2200. If it didn’t, well there was a second train that got in around midnight.

Gokteik Viaduct

We take the Mandalay to Lashio train over the Gokteik viaduct. The ManfromSeat61 would be proud. #burmesetrain #railway

The man from Seat61 has a lot to answer for. My 0300 alarm call for a start. We’re taking the “Train over the Gokteik Viaduct” today, the train goes from Mandalay to Lashio, and the only train each day leaves at 0400 and an upper class ticket will cost 3950 kyat (US$ 3.05) each.

Apart from today. (Well it still costs the same, but…)  Today it left at 0947.
