Changeable Mantleslug (Megapallifera mutabilis), taken November 9, 2025, in Georgia, US

A small, spotted slug puttering along a similarly spotted boulder on a warm November afternoon! This individual was braving the journey across this rock from one shady spot to the other, moving quite quickly to evade any predators in the area. The only thing near even resembling a scary face for this slug was a parasitoid wasp, but it was a species that prefers lepidopterans. Otherwise, anything small enough to see this individual as a meal would either find him bad tasting or be too scared to approach a busy hiking trail. This slug was in the clear!

They are very cute, but I can't ID them to a species even if I wanted to! There are a handful of specie sin your area that look super similar. Either way I hope they're living their best slug lives :)

Mantleslug (Genus Philomycus), taken September 22, 2025, in Georgia, US

A young slug out for a stroll on the leaves of a bush bowed down by the rain! Having gone out the day after a big storm, lots of water-loving invertebrates were out and about including crane flies, 8 billion mosquitoes, and slugs. Unlike the others, this individual was slithering right through a patch of sunlight, opening the opportunity for some nice, shiny photos. With the light reflecting off of it, you can see the uneven texture of its body very well—how cool!

Carolina Mantleslug (Philomycus carolinianus), taken November 8, 2025, in Georgia, US

A determined slug making its way up a tree trunk! It was pretty dry when I took this picture, so I was surprised to see a slug traveling so far from the ground. Despite the precarious conditions, this guy headed steadfastly upwards, moving at a relaxed pace (for a slug). The ability of slugs to change their shape from blob to articulate creature never ceases to amaze me. This individual is fully stretched, but it could become a sphere with just the slightest provocation!

Hahaha this is GOOD. The (?) made me lol. He tried his best. So there are a bunch of speckled brown/grey slugs in your area. The most common is the changeable mantleslug, but this kinda looks more like a Carolina mantleslug to me? Just based on the vaguely linear pattern of the speckling. Although that certainly doesn’t rule out the changeable mantleslug. Or maybe even could be a winding mantleslug, which is in the same genus as the Carolina mantleslug, but less common. It’s very difficult to say with any certainty! So you can just tell him it’s a mantleslug ;)
