Sandwiched between a bike shop and fashion retail, Taco Local is located in the upcoming hype neighbourhood in Jakarta, Panglima Polim, South Jakarta.
It was around our office area and is one of our team's favorite lunch spots in the hood. Not just offering a great selection of authentic Mexican food and killer Guacamolé, the place is also furnished with a casual and indie atmosphere that we fell in love with.
We decided that this adorable and homey Mexican restaurant is the perfect venue for our next Curator's Project photo-shoot with Reza Indra, Managing Editor of Nylon Guys Indonesia.
We also got a chance to dig deeper about the place with Sebastian Subakti, the brain behind Taco Local.
How did Taco Local come about?
S: Taco Local was founded by Sebastian Subakti along with brothers Heru & Dito Kartowisastro. Dito co-owns the Velodome bike shop and when part of the bike shop became available for rent back in January 2012, he sat down with Sebastian and Heru to cook up an idea of opening a casual taco shop that would fit into Panglima Polim's profile at that time. That's pretty much how Taco Local was created.
When did you realize you wanted to start a Taco Shack?
S: The idea to open a taqueria came naturally, as back then the Mexican food game in Jakarta was dominated by ‘Tex-Mex’ restaurants that thrive on the abundant using of cheese and sour cream. We wanted to come up with something a bit different, we wanted to show our own interpretation of Mexican food with a heavy emphasize on the grilled meats instead of the dipping and the copious amount of cheese and sour cream, and so we came up with our taqueria.
Any other passions?
S: We love shopping, mainly for food products. When we first opened, we would go to the market ourselves everyday to pick on the freshest ingredients that we would use on that day.
Most recommended drinks from your café?
S: That's actually a bit hard to answer. We love local products, which is why we always insisted that tacos are best consumed with a bottle of indo Saparella, a rootbeer locally produced in Yogyakarta, on the side. But when you're having a pre-meal drink we think that it is a tie between our Corriander Margarita and our Mexican Apple Jack. The margarita packs a lot of flavour from the coriander and will definitely get you going into the right taste direction before starting with the meal. The Mexican apple jack can also do no wrong, as it tastes like Christmas every time it hits your palette.
Favorite food from your café?
S: Our best-selling item used to be the Taco Lengua (beef tongue), but lately a lot of our regular customers have been shifting towards the Carnitas, which happens to be a new addition in the menu. Our personal on the other hand, is not listed on the menu. We love to play around and add extra toppings on our taco, burrito and quesadilla, which the customers could also do to. A lot of our customers tend to overlook the 'extras' section when this is actually where the fun begins. For example, we love a quesadilla elote with extra cicharon, or a carnitas taco with extra pineapple and al pastor sauce. There's no limit to what you can add to the dishes we have.
What are your opinions on online shopping?
S: Online shopping is actually one of the best things to have happen to us. It gives us direct access to things that we want to acquire without having to go through the trouble of browsing a number of shops. That being said, window shopping is also still one of the most therapeutic activity to counter boredom.
What are your favourite items from Shopdeca.com?
S: We particularly like your travel accessories section at the moment. We have our eyes on that sail racing red Herschel Canteen Lunch Bag. Actually anything that is food-related will always be interesting for us.
Anything you want to share about Taco Local and future plans?
S: So the group behind taco local has recently came up with another brand called BAO JI, it will be operating in the same manner and style that is employed by Taco Local but BAO JI will be focusing in selling baos and other asian delights.
Be sure to visit Taco Local and follow them on social media @tacolocal for more Mexican food updates.
