Grimes’ Visions Gets Classical Interpretation for New Concert Series

Composers reworked each song on the album for the upcoming “Many Visions” shows

The songs from Grimes’ 2012 album Visions will receive classical music interpretations by 13 composers during a concert series called “Many Visions: Plumes Deconstructs the Music of Grimes.” The event was conceived by Plumes, a Montreal-based ensemble. Shows will take place across Canada this month. See the itinerary below. There are also plans to record the performances for streaming.

“We wanted to see how we could bridge the gap between popular and classical music—we have a suspicion it’s smaller than people think,” Luke Nickel (co-director of Winnipeg’s Cluster New Music and Integrated Arts Festival) said to MusicWorks. “We want to think about interpretation and rearrangement, not only in terms of musical material but also in terms of the spirit of an artist. That led us to Grimes, whose DIY attitude seems to resonate across genres.”

“The theme of the festival is dismantling, taking something apart and reconstructing it,” Plumes’ Geof Holbrook told MusicWorks. In an interview with NOW Magazine, composer Monica Pearce said, “It’s going to be quite different from the album, which I think will be really exciting.”

Different faction romances are fun! There’s something sweet about people from different worlds finding commonality or there’s tension created by the differences. What happens when the job finished? Do they talk about it or avoid the question altogether? Do they stay together? Does one change factions? Do they break up? etc etc.

However, I also think same faction romances are equally as fun to play around with and shouldn’t be discounted.

Did they know each other before? How? What was their history? Do they keep that history from the others (at least for a while)? Did they hate each other before? Is the thing getting in their way the fact they have this established knowledge of who they think the other person is but they’ve change or their LI has changed or the situation has cast them in a different light and oh gods oh no they can’t like them like that. Or maybe one’s been secretly in love with the other the whole time and they never planned on telling them before and there’s so much yearning because if the world ends how will they ever get another opportunity? Do they go back to the way things were before when it’s over? What if one of them decides not to go back at all because they’ve been so fundamentally changed by the narrative?

See also: somehow them not knowing each other at all more than in name/reputation. How does that work? What little series of events kept them from interacting at all or just barely that culminate in a story of misses that required an apocalypse to finally finally bring them together?

For my Crow!Rook and Lucanis romance, this presents itself as an intrigue. Selora was never meant to be known outside of the De Rivas, she was intended to operate as a spy for Viago he could plant anywhere without even the other houses being able to recognize her, and moving against the Antaam ruined all of that. On the one hand, once he has that knowledge, how could she ever be trusted not to have ulterior motives? On the other, how could she go back when she could never work that way again? What role does she play now that she’s known as Rook? Her purpose is moot.

Very fun to play with.
