so its been years and i totally forgot to post about it, but ive been playing through demon king chronicle, aka maou monogatari monogatari, again. i started a completely fresh save, because last time i was just so lost on the plot... this time around i have a much better grasp on it and i can definitely say its so friggin cool. its got all the trademark "you get bits and pieces of the story as you progress but its all shrouded in mystery at first and figuring out whats happening is a puzzle of its own" that katatema games always have. in other words, its peam.
it seems im near the end of the game but theres postgame content. ive already missed out on permanently-missable content, and you probably will too. as such even if you play the game yourself, i highly recommend reading through this written lets play of the game, since the lper went through the trouble of checking all the missable content. he also occasionally clears up things like mistranslations and typos. it should be noted that you can patch the game to have a slightly better translation, and patch for certain bugs that occur in the english version during the lategame.
while you could download the game from the official katatema website, i instead recommend dowloading through this archive.org link, since it includes the bug-fixing patch, the slightly better tl patch, a debug patch (if you wanna use it) AND the artbook that was available in the (now defunct) playism website when the english version was released. note that the artbook contains spoilers so i recommend you check it out only after finishing the game. theres also instructions on how to apply the patches, and its just very simple copypasting.
if you can handle the occasional grinding, remember the whole playing it like its a stealth game every time you find a new area, and persist through the many game overs, i really think youll find this game is yet another obscure gem much like irisu syndrome. just instead of the horror, its a story about stories.
