Poetry and Manifestos
There's been a real grass roots poetry operation appear at Queen Mary this year which has been really interesting to observe. I don't think Not So Popular are directly affiliated with the university but have several writers, they teamed up with another poetry production MAP Poetry recently but unfortunately I missed the event! It's amazing to see how many people are so keen on producing poetry, I've always been a little unenthused by it as a form, along with texts written in Old English and plucking my eyebrows it used to make me need to pee. I'm writing on The Waste Land for my dissertation though so its kind of made me more interested in poetry as a whole.
I really like the concept behind Not So Popular, in that everything once was 'not so popular', I love the fact they have a manifesto also. I'm reading the Granta 1984 'Travel Writing' edition at the moment and the Editorial by Bill Buford has a great line describing 'the corners of the world uncontaminated by the manifestos of modernity'. Despite this less than flattering characterisation I still want to produce one for Quest Radio when things have calmed down a bit work wise.
