Mapi’s alarm was going off on the other side of the bed. You groaned because she wasn’t turning it off like she usually would. “Turn it off, please. It’s too loud.” You said, turning her way, but Mapi hadn’t even woken up from the loud noise. So, you leaned over her and turned it off yourself.
When you lay back down, you gently shake Mapi awake, and put your hand on her cheek when her eyes start to open slowly. She feels a little warm, but you brush it off, thinking it’s because she just woke up.
“Good morning, cariño.” You say as you nuzzle into her. She just hums back, still half asleep and pulls you closer into her. “As much as I love this, we should get ready for training.” You placed a kiss on her cheek and got up to get ready.
It wasn’t unusual for your girlfriend to stay in bed for a little longer, she loved to lie in and wake up a little more while you were getting ready. You love her very much, but you weren’t complaining about having the bathroom to yourself.
The two of you always had a nice routine going on mornings that you had training. You both worked alongside each other with getting ready, making breakfast, and getting your kit bags packed.
You loved being able to rely on routines, and maybe being so focused on your part within them was the reason you missed that something was wrong with your girlfriend.
She took a little longer getting ready, didn't finish her breakfast, and flushed her drink down the drain when you weren't looking.
Every little change had gone unnoticed by you, until you were on the training grounds under the burning sun. It was a hot session for all of you, and that said a lot, since most of you were used to the temperatures in Barcelona.
Mapi didn't seem to be dealing with it well, she was slowing down. Her movements, that were usually quick, calculated and well executed, were now sloppy and not working out how she had planned.
You grabbed both your water bottles between exercises and walked her way to check in on her, but before you could even reach her side she slumped down to the ground.
“Mapi!” You yelled out in worry as you sprinted the rest of the way. Your yell alarming the rest of the team, including the medical team who instantly shot into action.
When you arrived by her side, she laid passed out on the ground. “Mapi, wake up.” you say while softly shaking her. But no immediate response.
The medical team arrived shortly after, and with some icepacks they were able to wake her up quickly again. They did a complete check up, she had spiked a fever and seemed extremely dehydrated.
They advised her to go to the hospital to get some fluids, so that's what you did. You immediately packed up both your bags and drove her to the hospital. She was admitted and given IV fluids right away.
You had been sitting next to Mapi the whole time, silently supporting her while she was sleeping. But the moment she woke up again, she immediately tried to get up. When you told her to lay back down she shook her head. “I’ve got to finish training, we have to go back.”
With your hand on her arm still, you moved your finger over it gently. "Your only job today is to rest and get better.” And so she finally gave in, and laid back down. Getting the rest and fluids she needed to heal.

Living with your best friend was great. You always had your comfort person around you, the house was always filled with your inside jokes and laughter, and you always had someone to talk to. However, living with the person you were secretly in love with, came with some struggles.
You met Maria in a photography course, long before the both of you had reached the fame you had now. She made it big in football, and you in the music industry. Your shared home was filled with your photographs and all sorts of cameras on the shelves.
Besides owning a lot of camera’s, you owned your fair share of notebooks. As a singer-songwriter, you always carried one with you to write down whatever song ideas that came to mind.
Your notebook was filled also with a million ways you could share your feelings with Maria, but none of them ever felt right. You are good with words, all your songs were written by yourself, yet when it came to writing down your feelings for Maria, you struggled. There was so much you could say, but your mind always held you back.
Just like now, you had started on writing a song, but your mind had drifted to your best friend. Mid-writing session, you started scribbling down your thoughts of her. So deep in it that you hadn't realised that Mapi had walked in.
When she stepped closer, you quickly closed your notebook. Mapi knew your notebooks were off-limits, she knew you would only show people the stuff you wanted to share, so she never peeked, only asked to get sneak peeks of your new songs. “Working on anything I can listen to?”
Her smile grew when you told her you had been. You grab your guitar from beside you, and Maria takes a seat. “It’s one I’ve been working on about my parents.” Mapi didn’t miss the flash of sadness that filled your eyes for a second. You lost your parents a few years ago, Maria and her family had been there for you in more ways than you could have ever imagined. You had always been able to talk with Maria about them and your feelings after the accident, but this was the first time you had tried putting those thoughts into a song.
Mapi places her hand on your knee shortly and gives it a soft squeeze, while you get your guitar ready. You start strumming the cords, and after a few counts, you take a deep breath before singing what you had written so far.
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Just like a memory
You never left me
You just left too soon
I'll save you a seat next to me
You're always at the table
Hope you're proud of what you see
Watchin' with the angels
You're written in my soul
It's your blood that I bleed
Wherever you are, wherever I'll be
I'll save you a seat
When you look up, you’re not the only one with tears in their eyes, Mapi is wiping away hers as well. “They would be so proud of you, I know they would be.” She says as she brings you in for a hug, after you put the guitar down. “Thank you, that means a lot.”
The two of you had a lot of moments like that over the month, you loved sharing parts of songs to Maria, and she loved every piece that you let her be a part of. In turn you also supported her at her games, like you had always done.
Life continued as you were working on your album. Writing, and recording took up a lot of time, but you really loved what you were making. This might be your new favourite album of yours. It reached levels of emotions you had never shared before. That actually made it a little scary to put out, because you were putting yourself in a more vulnerable position than you had ever done before. But when you finally finished the whole album, you knew it was all going to be worth it.
Before you would have a small listening party of the album for friends and family, you and Maria sat down at one of your favourite restaurants. You had asked her to join you, hoping it would ground you a bit before sharing the project that you’ve been working on for so long, yet it didn’t really help to ground you.
Mapi noticed you were spacing out a little, your leg nervously bouncing up and down, and you were just moving the food on your plate around with your fork. She reached out her hand and placed it over yours. Your eyes focussed on your hands and then looked up to her face. You could tell just from the look in her eyes, that there was nothing but pride behind them.
“I know showing us what you’ve been working on is nervewrecking, but I also know that each and everyone of us is proud of you. We all love you, and your music very much. We cannot wait to hear the masterpieces that you’ve created. I for one cannot wait to hear all the little snippets come together and see which parts have made the album.” She squeezed your hand. “And your parents will be looking down on their daughter proudly, like they always have and always will.”
You touch the necklace that was hanging from your neck, the one your brother had given you after you lost your parents. Engraved on the back was a picture of the four of you, the last picture you had ever taken together. You squeeze Maria’s hand back, “Thank you. You always know what to say.”
Once you got to the venue, a small record shop in the city, you went your separate ways. You went to warm up and get ready, while Mapi waited with the other guests that were arriving. When she saw your brother come in, she beelined to him. “Were they able to make them?” He nodded proudly, “Yeah, exactly how we wanted.” He pulled out two plaques, each with the text ‘This seat is reserved for:’ continued by the names of each of your parents. Together they put them on the two front seats in the middle.
Your manager got up on the stage and asked everyone to sit down. The small crowd of people close to you took their seats, leaving the two reserved seats for your parents empty. Next to them sat Mapi and your brother on either side of them. Your manager announced you, and you walked out onto the stage, looking around the room.
You smiled looking around all your friends and family that had shown up, and then your eyes fell onto the two empty seats. The plaques on the chairs made your tears well up, you looked between Maria and your brother and mouthed a quick thank you.
“Hi everyone! Thank you so much for coming tonight. As you can see I’m already getting a little emotional. For me music comes with a lot of emotions, I can put every thought and feeling into words and write about them. This is the first time I’ll be putting out an album without my parents being here to listen to it. Well, sort of, I know they’re always watching us.” You share a look with your brother when you say the last part.
“This album is filled with songs that describe me and my life over the past couple of years. It’s a very personal one for me, but I’m ready to share it with all of you, if you’re ready as well.” You looked out over your guests, who were all clapping and cheering for you.
You started strumming your guitar, and played the first few songs. It was the first time you had played them in front of people outside of the studio, and you could feel them hanging onto every word. It felt good to share the music with them, and you felt proud of the songs you had created.
“Alright, this next one is for you, mom and dad.” You look between their chairs and then look up. You start playing the song, and Mapi instantly recognises it from the time you played her a snippet of it.
I feel you in the rain that falls, oh, I still get shivers
Runnin' like our family car down Corvidae
Did you find Mom up there? Tell me, are you with her?
I wonder if the ones who go miss the ones who stay
You look at your brother while singing the part about the ones who stay. Watching him crying, and wiping away his tears, almost makes you cry, but you manage to continue the song.
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Just like a memory
You never left me
You just left too soon
I'll save you a seat next to me
You're always at the table
Hope you're proud of what you see
Watchin' with the angels
You sing the final part while looking at the two reserved seats in front of you. Perfectly matched to the song lyrics you had written.
You're written in my soul
It's your blood that I bleed
Wherever you are, wherever I'll be
I'll save you a seat
After you finish the song, you have a small break to take a sip of water. You talk a bit more about the album, and how writing it felt for you. Then you continue playing another couple of the new songs.
“Just a couple more songs to go. I know that I’ve said this with basically every song so far, but this one is really close to my heart. This one is called ‘In case you didn’t know’.” You announce the next song nervously.
I can't count the times
Almost said what's on my mind
But I didn't
Just the other day
I wrote down all the things I'd say
But I couldn't
I just couldn't
You think back of the endless pages you’ve filled. Looking over to Maria shortly before quickly moving your gaze to the back of the room again.
Baby, I know that you've been wonderin'
So here goes nothin'
In case you didn't know
Baby, I'm crazy 'bout ya
And I would be lyin' if I said
That I could live this life without ya
Even though, I don't tell you all the time
You had my heart a long, long time ago
You can’t bring yourself to stay on the song long, too nervous about the confession that you had just made. Most people in the room wouldn’t know who the song was about, but there were some lyrics in the song that would mean something to the person it was about. The one person in the room you currently could not let your eyes fall onto.
You moved on to the last two songs. Earning yourself a standing ovation from the whole audience. You smiled proudly and thanked everyone for coming out, and telling them to stick around for the small party you would be joining in a bit.
Before you turn around to leave the stage, you let your eyes fall on Maria. She is smiling at you and clapping, just like the rest of the crowd. You smile back at her, and turn around. You get backstage, which was just the backroom of the record shop and start pacing the room.
A soft knock interrupted you quickly after. It was Mapi who opened the door, stepped in and closed the door behind you. “I told you, masterpieces. Every single song was a masterpiece, you did incredible on the album.” She said as she walked towards you and engulfed you in a hug.
She steps back a little, still holding onto you, her eyes locked on yours. “Oh, and in case you didn't know, I'm crazy about you too."
Your smile grows, and your heart is beating out of your chest. “You knew?” You ask, as if you hadn’t incorporated bits that only she would know about for the sole purpose of her realising the song was about her. “Of course I knew. Unless you’ve been doing those things with other girls as well.” She jokes, which makes you laugh. “Nope, only you.”
Mapi leans in closer, and when you make no efforts to stop her, she connects her lips with yours, and you kiss her back instantly. The noises of your friends and family in the other room fade away as you have this moment for just the two of you.
