FEATURED FINALIST 2016 HEIKO TIEMANN, Germany Boy with drape, from the series "Infliction", 2014 This image is part of my long ongoing series ""Infliction"" which started in 2013 a school for children. It is within an area with a lot of social problems and it is a place where such problems resurface quite significantly. There are 'overlooked' individuals within our society and who have become more and more neglected by the mechanisms and dynamics of our system. There is a sense of deep respect and humbleness which I feel. I don‘t want to exploit the children, but to give them a visual voice which will have strong echoes of importance in a manner which is solely grounded within their own history, appearance and inner circumstances. They are individuals with a strong personality and deserve all the respect. First there is the process of involvement. I did have to integrate myself with empathy and curiosity. At the same time I have to keep my focus on my visual sensitivity. Who gives them a position of expressing or even the possibility of just being for the purpose of being? There is a sense of deep respect and humbleness which I feel. They are from difficult backgrounds like immigrant families, refugees, orphanages and dysfunctional families. FEATURED FINALIST 2016 Natural Bodybuilder ALEXIS PAZOUMIAN France This portrait is part of a project " Natural Bodybuilder ". This project is the result of collaboration with another photographer, Baptiste Glorion. We met this competitor near Paris during the regional qualifier in Mantes-la-Joile. Prior to shooting this series, we thought that natural bodybuilding was just another one of those steroid-fuelled pantomimes you see on late-night television. Witnessing the spectacle first-hand, however, quickly put us in our places. It turns out the sport's entire shtick is that it's free from the "get-ripped-quick" drugs that people generally associate with bodybuilding. We visited the Paris regional qualifier in Mantes-la-Joile and the French National Championship final in Lormont. People at both events were welcoming and humble – something you probably wouldn't expect from what's essentially a spray-tanned posing contest. Good Morning all ! LET'S MEET THE KLPA TEAM STEVEN V-L LEE, Founder & Project Director Steven is a Malaysian independent photographer based in London. In 2009, Steven initiated the KUALA LUMPUR INTERNATIONAL PHOTOAWARDS, (KLPA) an annual international portrait photography competition centred in Malaysia, focussing on the best in contemporary portrait photography and has attracted the participation of some top international photographers. He began his photographic career as a documentary and travel photographer in the late 90's when he began writing travel related articles for magazines. In 2005, Steven formed EXPLORENATION.NET, a portal dedicated to photography education combined with the enjoyment of travel workshops which he continues today. Steven continues to run photography educational workshops through EXPOSURE+ Photo Mentoring platform in Kuala Lumpur with other local photographers, and has been a portfolio reviewer at the Mt Rokko International Photography Festival in Kobe, Japan from 2013 to 2015. He also gives classes on Documentary and Street photography at City Academy, London.
