Classic Architectural Projection Mapping Competition 2014
Entry work by DELTA PROCESS (Italy)
This video was made for MANE at CSM during the academic year 2015-2016. This metaphysical projection experience is based on and fueled by Sarah-Jane Norman’s performance “Stone tape theory” that considers haunted places as places fulfilled with memories. After our first visiting to the eerie, empty and haunted Bemerton garage, we revisited the place as other ghostbusters to reinvent its memories and get inspired, on the grounds of the fact that no space is neutral - every space, as every human being, has its own memories. In order to familiarize with the space, we projected pictures of us with family and friends - happy moments. In this way, we tried to embody memories to its walls and create emotional links. After that we projected moving images related to physics (and metaphysics) in order to “prepare” the space for the clients (Institute Of Physics). Finally, we projected materials, patterns, textiles, colors, fabrics and several cozy spaces in order to spark our imagination and get inspired! We closed this video with a promise we gave: to design freely and break every wall that preserves people from communicating!
The song played in the video is La Femme’s "Nous Etions Deux".

PROJECTION MAPPING FOR NOOBS!
I know some of you are wondering what projection mapping means…well…As I said in my first article, I know nothing about it, so I think I'm going to ask one of my co-workers for a simple and clear definition.
...Ok…I guess I'll have to do a little research all by myself...
Let's start with basics!
Projection Mapping is a pretty new technology used to project 3D and 2D graphic effects and animations on almost any kind of surface, plain or irregular, turn them into interactive displays.
It was born long time ago from military technology, only in 1969 it was used for the first time for entertainment when Disneyland decided to open their Haunted Mansion Ride (thanks Wikipedia)...
But only on the early 2000s we started to use it seriously for advertising, entertainment and artworks. The first ones to use projection mapping in entertainment and communication environments were VJs from France, Spain, UK, and The Netherlands. Here in Italy it's something pretty recent.
How does it work?
First of all, this technique requires to scan and map the surface of the object or building by using a specialized software. The intention of this study is to match every point of the surface with the animation and graphic we will project on it, creating a fluid and realistic visual effect in which the object comes alive.
After every single architectural or physic detail of the surface is scanned, the visual animation are designed specifically to highlight and emphasized them.
Also the projectors and audio devices position is well-thought depending on the public location, the purpose is to synchronize the animation, sound effects and music to create a 360 immersive and interactive experience.
In fact there are close links between music and this technology. It's easy to admire a great mapping projection during a musical event. But it is used also on artistic installations, on stages during a theatrical representation or a show, and also for big advertising campaign.
Mapping projection is categorized depending on the object or surface studied: Architectural or Monumental Mapping is referred to projection on buildings, car mapping to projection on....well, cars.... etc...
At the end projection mapping technology is a new, complete and artistic medium to communicate any kind of message, idea or emotion with the goal to attract and astonish people. A way to transfer imagination on the real world. But frankly we always discover some new ways to use it, like artificial illumination or medicine.
I hope I have been helpful.

DAY ONE: WELCOME TO THE IMMERSIVE BLOG!
Hello and welcome to this new amazing Immersive Blog! And also welcome to me!
Yes, because this is my very first post on the blog and, as every good newbie blogger, I’m going to introduce myself. My name is Andrea and I’m a man…Yes, I know, the name can be deceiving… I’m twentysomething years old, I’m the Social Media something of Drawlight S.r.l., and like Jon Snow I know nothing!
I don’t know anything about design, projection mapping and 3D Animation.
The first time I heard the words “Immersive Media” I thought about a new way to communicate underwater.
The first time I’ve watched a car mapping projection I thought it was a new crazy color shifting paint.
I’ve almost broke a transparent display with my hand trying to reach a bottle of wine.
So, why I’m here posting? Well, because I really want to learn as much as I can about those topics while I update this blog.
And maybe because I know where my boss Mick lives and he’s afraid of my inexpressive serial killer face…
Well, under this cold, dead-muscles skinny face lies a big smile, just like The Joker’s, and like him I hope to put a smile on your face… not by using the Joker Venom, but with my posts.
With the help of my new co-workers I will try to fulfill your curiosity and keep you informed on this beautiful world full of creativity, technology and emotions.
I will update you about our progress and I will describe our projects with my external and funny point of view.
So stay connected for more posts…
Jason Silva calls technologies of media “engines of empathy.” They allow us to look through someone else’s eyes, experience someone else’s story—and develop a sense of compassion and understanding ...
You know, it's nice when you're showcased somewhere, newspapers.. documentaries.. but this one, this is a real pleasure! We've been featured in the famous show "Shots of Awe" where the personality and performance philosopher Jason Silva talks about virtual reality and how it can augment our way of living, through thoughts that become our very skin.
And what could explain this better than our 360 3D video mapping installation of "Bozzolo", the famous Rabarama sculpture that changes its skin right in front of your eyes!
Here is our full installation for you to watch: http://youtu.be/OZfTKSmPxxA
We'd like to thank the show producers for choosing our mapping projection as an example of where we're heading as human beings through the use of smart technologies that can integrate, evolve and extend ourselves.
Let's keep on spreading these viral, inspiring, shows!
Ah, you might want to watch how we made it! http://youtu.be/0cDMymxYDeA
