In the first of the Refashion Africa series, creative tastemakers share reasons to Love Maputo City.

What do you Love about your city?
A: I love my city for the cultural diversity, the rhythms, the culture, the architecture, the smells, the diversity of colors and contrasts around the streets and avenues.
What are the best qualities about your city?
A: I love the climate, the friendliness that characterizes the people here, the warmth and heartiness that they convey to whoever comes to our land. The proximity of things is also an advantage, greatly facilitates the movement within in the city.
Favorite things to see/do in Maputo city.
A: Go to shows of Mozambican musicians (such as Stewart Sukuma and Yolanda Kakana). Eat typical foods (chicken to Zambezian, mucapata or nhagana and xima). I enjoy attending craft fairs with multiple colors, shapes, textures and smells (Feima or Pau Market), go to the beach, to be socializing with friends.
To exchange experiences and live unique moments. I really appreciate the sunsets, they are amazing.

What do you Love about your city?
A: Maputo is a very interesting place. It’s a meeting point for a variety of tribes so there’s all sort of small events and new spots all the time. I think that’s my favorite thing: the interactions between the people. I also love the positivity of it: smiles everywhere, great weather, delicious food, unexpected encounters, so you always have something that makes you happy that day. There is always a moment during the day when you go “Only in Maputo!” and in that moment you feel so glad that life has brought you here.
What are the best qualities about your city?
A: Maputo is a great host. I have yet to meet someone that doesn’t like this city. The people here welcome you and make sure you are confortable constantly. Besides that, I like the fact that the more and more it is becoming a cultural hub: so there’s almost always a cultural event happening, and they’re not expensive, so culture in Maputo has become accessible, art has become accessible, and essentially what it means is that we are building a safe space for creative people and I love that.
Favorite things to see/do in Maputo city.
A: If you could only do three things while in Maputo I’d tell you to go to the fish market and just do the whole experience: buy the raw fish and seafood, then go to a restaurant, sit down while you wait for the food, buy some local art, eat a few roasted peanuts and then get your hands dirty eating the shrimp! Secondly, find yourself a good spot with a view, it can be the Marginal, it can be the Professor’s Garden, it can be the Miradouro, there are a lot of points in town where you have a clear view of the whole bay and they’re good spots to write, read, listen to some music or just sit down and see the day go by.
Finally, you have to go to a house party. Any house. Any party. The point is to be a part of a group, a tribe, and just enjoy it: dance, engage in conversations, listen to music, flirt, have a drink or two, or more. Be as free and opened as possible and you’ll for sure have a great time.
