Tabitha & Courtney headcanons/dynamic ramblings under the cut because (CLENCHES MY EYES SHUT REALLY HARD) They're Special Friends.

i haven't fully sorted out what kind of dynamic i want them to start off with at the beginning of their relationship, but i enjoy the idea of them having almost "competed" a bit with each other at first before they were promoted to admins, with courtney having started in a higher position than tabitha despite being there for a shorter time, which sort of tugged on his ego and started to create a tension that otherwise wouldn't have been there. maxie had taken courtney under his wing, and tabitha was more like something of a suck-up to him, and so they were both competing for maxie's attention as well — even more than they do nowadays. in fact, these days they're more like this about him:

in the present, courtney and tabitha have to work together often.

and, to be honest, tabitha cares about courtney a lot. even if he's kind of abrasive or exasperated with her sometimes, he always loops back around into making sure she's okay (!) and he's very much an "acts of service" kind of guy, cus he'd probably combust into flames saying how he felt out loud instead of making sure she's not overwhelmed or that she ate today or that camerupt's feeling up to going out with them on duty today. they can still bicker a bit, especially when it comes to things they're each passionate about, or over and in front of maxie. and courtney thinks it's VERY amusing to tease him (which he almost feels is uncharacteristic of her — she never really teases anyone else but him! others don't even register that she could BE so sarcastic and biting!!!) but she'd never want to actually hurt him, and, likewise, she's one of the only people for tabitha that if he genuinely upset, it would probably haunt him with guilt for weeks. even so, they both tend to say things they don't mean when they're emotional, and neither of them are particularly great with expressing and managing their emotions — shoutout to team magma for having the collective emotional intelligence of a walnut — but they're also lucky enough that they can usually drag the other back to earth if they need to before it gets to that point. most people still wouldn't want to stand up to tabitha since he can get really intense, but that's... not really an issue with courtney. she honestly kind of sees right through him. she knows he's a complete and utter dork and has seen that side of him far more than anyone else.

courtney admires tabitha for a lot of the same reasons she admires maxie so much, except he's actually somewhat approachable and a peer to her rather than the boss she idolizes. the grunts do like tabitha (one of my favorite points of tabitha lore) but they find courtney kind of strange and offputting in comparison... so, she can have a hard time with them when she has a lot of issues, especially in a social sense, whereas tabitha's very good at balancing them out cus he's straightforward and speaks his mind and generally knows how to navigate stuff like that (when he isn't getting all worked up, of course. i like to imagine he's actually rather competent and convincing professionally when he's not making a fool of himself). as such, courtney isn't close with very many people at all and probably doesn't have much of a family connection (in thinking about her pre-magma days i like to think team magma was the closest thing she felt to family in a long time even if it doesn't really register as such). she's a little weird in that she's both very asocial, but also laps up any crumb of affection she can get from the people she does care about... even when that ends up being from tabitha. and they accidentally end up a lot closer than they would have anticipated.

in theory, and true to team magma spirit, tabitha likes to keep things professional on the job, no matter what it's about (key word: in Theory; it's not like he actually ends up following this half the time and he is a little hypocrite about it) whereas courtney isn't super great with implicit boundaries, so i like to imagine tabitha is occasionally sort of pushing her off of him a bit since she's become comfortable with him... she doesn't get why he's always so flustered about things, but he would be allergic to PDA either way. and still, in the after hours... he always gives in and lets courtney lay on him while he's doing whatever on his laptop to clock in for the day. it's like a hobby for them to be lazy together as much as they're busy together.

and they both think skitty is one of if not the cutest pokemon, so they'll go to the mall and courtney wins him pokemon plush prizes in a crane game, and tabitha's like, Shouldn't I be doing this for you??? and she's like, No. because she's also a million times better at it than he is. if tabitha were to get courtney a gift i think it would be cute for him to gift her something like a batch of lava cookies + a skitty sweater + noise cancelling headphones. and to be honest i don't think courtney would know what to get him. one of her laminated photos of maxie...???

courtney insists on watching over him when he's sick, and he feels humiliated being doted on, but she thinks it's very cute. courtney doesn't always show a lot of emotions in her face, and she usually has to deliberately do so, when she suddenly beams at tabitha, he can't help but be taken aback and enamored, to be so lucky to be at the receiving end of that.

and they were/are both scientists, so it's silly to imagine how they could absolutely nerd-out with each other... as much as tabitha loves to talk, courtney likes to listen, and the silence isn't so bad, either.

i think courtney is kind of like falin where she's sort of disinterested/inattentive with most other people (and the world of them around her) because she's always been used to not fitting in and accepting that as her lot in life, even if she's not unkind to people or anything, but then she has a few very specific people she either takes interest in or who she'd do pretty much anything for and is extremely attached to in comparison (maxie, tabitha, and moreso just very intruiged by the player)
