I think the true beauty of Donna & the Doctor’s relationship is that in the beginning, she is the one with a narrower focus of concern (ie: her wedding) and he is the one who always has the bigger picture (ie: all of humanity) on his mind. And by the end (or what we thought of for so long as the end) of their story, Donna’s grown almost past that first selfish instinct - only, she still thinks of it as an unfair loss, because she was “supposed to be with him forever”. And the Doctor, who always does the right thing and puts others first, seals the metacrisis up tight along with her memories and then skedaddles (albeit sadly) away.

But with the new specials we’ve been given, I noticed a really wonderful thing; their roles have reversed. The Doctor (14, technically) is now the one with a single narrow focus of concern; Donna Noble. He would let the world burn if it meant she would be alright. Meanwhile Donna is now the one easily and consistently putting humanity’s needs and safety above her own. They’ve completely switched positions on the scale, and I think that’s just really fascinating!
