BLCD Review: Aisaretagari no Surface
Title: Aisaretagari no Surface (愛されたがりのサーフェイス)
Author/Artist: Momose An
Release Date: 2021/02/24
Cast:
Masuda Toshiki x Ono Yuuki *nice choice, but y’all shouldn’t have been shy and cast this as Ono Yuuki x Takahashi Hiroki instead. 🙊
Kumagai Kentarou
Synopsis: Hiruma Itsuki will be co-starring with the younger popular actor, Kasugai Kei, as his brother. In order to become acclimated to their roles, the two are made to live together for the duration of shooting. Itsuki soon finds out that the refreshing and well-behaved Kei was actually a play-boy who slept with anyone and everyone! After giving up on helping Kei like an older brother, Kei pushes him down and asks him to “rehabilitate” him?!
Review Proper
You know, if 25-ji Akasaka de was bad, it would look something like this. Therefore, it looks exactly like Dakaretai Otoko. I don’t know, man. The plot is bad, but like, I don’t think the manga was half as bad as the BLCD—and that’s not something you’ll hear me say every day I’ll say this again probably next month when Tsunaida comes out. You know what this experience reminds me of? Fucking what’s their name again? Yeah, Takasaki Bosco. I mean, the plot was the holy trinity of rapey, trashy, and the audacity of the dumbassery, but istg the BLCD was just wrong. Mind you, I haven’t read the raws (bc ew do I look like I’d spend coin on Momose An?), but I’m pretty sure that sensei knows how to pace if nothing else. To give you a concrete idea on how things were moving, in chapter 1, Itsuki-san walks into Kei having sex with whoever, and he’s like “sorry for intruding your time with your lover, bro”, but Kei immediately corrects him and says that that wasn’t his lover, and that he was a manwhore. AND NOT EVEN A SECOND LATER, KEI PUSHES ITSUKI-SAN DOWN, AND I THOUGHT THEY WERE STILL DOING FOREPLAY, BUT HIS DICK WAS ALREADY IN ITSUKI-SAN’S ASS?!
They didn’t even prep his ass? We don’t even know if Itsuki-san had any experience with anal before this event?
Wow. The pacing there was just as fast as my patience running out, which brings us to our next point: the casting.
It actually didn’t bother me that Massu was topping Ono here, even though I wanted a reverse because of my sunk Cupid ni Rakurai ship and Stray Blue. I mean, he does pretty well as a top. And if there was just one good thing that I could say about this whole shebang, it would be Massu’s acting. He was a shoe-in for Kei’s role even.
BUT
IDK MAN, ONO PLAYING ITSUKI-SAN’S ROLE JUST GAVE ME THE HEEBIE-JEEBIES!
GET AWAY FROM ME, SATAN!
I was just so uncomfortable hearing Ono in such a dumb role that I could feel my whole body reject it. This casting is not right. This casting is disgusting. You don’t understand. I mean, Kasugai Kei is the same, but Hiruma Itsuki had a personality that was as flat as a fucking piece of paper. And having Ono voice him considering Ono’s forte of dramatic and dynamic roles IS SUCH A HUGE DISSERVICE.
I was waiting for them to just give me KumaKen, but it wasn’t worth the effort. I hate this. Fuck it. Marble, just what the fuck are you doing? I would understand it if this was Marine, but what the fuck are you doing? I feel like it’s all gone down hill for Marble ever since Love Me, Love My Dog. Everybody press F. And again, why? I can forgive Marble begrudgingly for adapting Sakura Riko, but to even ride the Momose An adaptation train with Movic and Frontier? MOMOSE AN DOESN’T EVEN DO GOOD SMUT JESUS CHRIST HOW’D THEY GET FIVE ADAPTATIONS?! I might be getting real harsh here, but as I say in literally every bad review, there are so many other works out there that deserve an adaptation with voice actors as talented as these! WHEN ARE WE GETTING HAJI?! AM I GOING TO DIE BEFORE THAT HAPPENS?!
Breathe, Cheska. Breathe.
Now, if you’re a fan of Momose An and this series, lmao why this would probably be okay to listen to (assuming you don’t mind Ono doing this). From the previews I’ve seen in ebookjapan, they rearranged some things. However, since I didn’t read the whole thing, I cannot judge how closely it followed the manga. But I don’t think that they used a higher-level of Japanese in these, so listening to this might be possible even if you’re a beginner. If you’re just in for a good and hot actors BL, just go listen to and read 25-ji. It’s not exactly smutty, but dang Satou Takuya on that was sex-on-legs.
Ya, see you in Coyote, Ono. ✨
BLCD Review: Love Me Love My Dog
Title: Love Me Love My Dog
Release Date: 2020/08/26
Author/Artist: Nago Nayuta
Cast:
Kumagai Kentarou x Takahashi Hiroki
Kamio Shinichirou
Kijima Ryuuichi
Synopsis: Akihiko, a bisexual author with a casual approach to sex, is put in the care of rookie editor Aiichirou, a diligent and naïve young man who has always admired Akihiko as an author. With their different views on life, what will happen when Aiichirou walks in on him sharing a bed with a man?! Spin-off to the popular 'Hoshi to Harinezumi'.
Review Proper
First off, I haven’t read/listened to Hoshi to Harinezumi, so I’ve drawn all of my opinions without that knowledge. Anyway, LMLMD works as a standalone pretty well, so I can still say with confidence that LMLMD was boring as fuck. 😂
Yo, I’m sorry. Not only does this story have one of the most generic plots in existence, it also has no significant climaxes nor character development whatsoever. The fact that this was even adapted offends me. I mean, how dare Marble have the budget to get Takahashi Hiroki on board on this when they could have repurposed that budget and TakaHiro himself on something that’s actually deserving of an adaptation. 😤
How was this even nominated for best BL comics?! And these two have been also nominated for best top and best bottom?! What the fuck?
Man-slut plots do not go well with the one-volume fluffy and lightly-drawn romcom aesthetic. There, I said it. That’s honestly a conflict in itself. Y’all are selling a goddamn love-traumatized gigolo for godsakes. Of course he needs more character depth/development! The lack of drama turned him into a boring character with 0 personality and sexual appeal. Doesn’t help that Ai-chan’s only personality was obsessed. 🙄 The Doujin ni and Nakamura Shungiku’s editor-author series have more personality and eroticism as compared to this—and that’s saying a lot. I’m not really familiar with Nago Nayuta works, but I hope they don’t use this aesthetic in the future. I don’t want them to end up like another sensei I SuzuMinta know. 🤔
I was immediately reluctant in listening to this even though I knew from the start that TakaHiro will be playing Akihiko. I mean, I love the man, but he’s pretty hit and miss in BLCDs the duration I’ve known him (sorry). He did well in DakaOtoko 6 and 7, but I just couldn’t get 5 out of my mind. HOWEVER, since Hetalia was coming back and all, how could I not pay homage to our decade long relationship by listening to his BLCD? So, I hope you’re happy TakaHiro, because I endured that barefoot walk on broken glass for you. Anyway, fortunately for all of us, TakaHiro did well in this, too. Do I prefer his blank-ass Akihiko to his spineless Takato-san, however? I think I’d prefer him as just Japan, no thank you.
Kumagai Kentarou also did well, but his character was so bland that he mostly didn’t stand out—scratch that, nobody stood out between the two of them. If I had to make special mentions, it would be for Kamio Shinichirou who sounded a little like Tadokoro Hinata. You know, I searched his name while typing this out and came across his songs from Hypnosis Mic and I instantly regret it. The man does have a deep voice, but I need more of his normal roles to see if I want to hear him again because Hypnosis Mic might have given me a seizure.
The voice work was okay and it was pretty faithful to the manga, but I really wouldn’t recommend listening to this, let alone buying this because I believe that it’s a waste of time. If there was an author-editor story that was much more deserving of an adaptation, it would be Aruku’s Kimi no Yume o Mite Iru. Imagine Kimi no Yume with TakaHiro topping KumaKen!!! Anyway, if you want to hear an author-editor story that’s better than this one, give the Doujin ni and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi series a try. They’re not significantly better plot and character development wise, but at least the sex is hot.
BLCD Review: Cupid ni Rakurai 2
Title: Cupid ni Rakurai Tsuigeki (キューピッドに落雷追撃)
Release Date: 2020/03/25
Author/Artist: Suzumaru Minta
Cast:
Shimono Hiro x Masuda Toshiki
Ono Yuuki
Toki Shunichi
Tokutake Tatsuya
Tomohito Takatsuka
Kumagai Kentarou
Ishiya Haruki
Synopsis: The awaited sequel!!! 😭😭😭
Review Proper
Now that’s the SuzuMinta I know and love! Everything else just pales in comparison. I didn’t even know that Cupid ni Rakurai had a sequel, so when I saw the announcement for the adaptation of it, I was ecstatic! If y’all didn’t know, Cupid ni Rakurai was one of my 2018 faves just after Sweet Delivery Boy, Nights Before Night, and the KD series. It’s not a unique concept, but the execution of it was great! Also, I just adore genki boys like Shingo and for Ao to actually be considerate of him despite his seemingly brash attitude—ugh. 😩 That being said, sequels usually only go so many ways: happy gays ultra (Gelateria Supernova), misunderstandings/insecurities featuring third party appearances (KD), or extreme undeserved pain (NBN). Seeing as SuzuMinta doesn’t go for anything plot heavy and tragic, I was pretty sure that Cupid ni Rakurai was going to go for the second route because no one really goes the first route except for smutty titles and a few light stuff. 😂 Lo and behold, it really did go into that direction. I really hate it when Captain Communication leaves the building, but since they’re still in high school, I was going to give them a chance. Surprisingly enough, it wasn’t entirely predictable, which was nice. It was a good sequel overall.
And now onto the voice work,
I’m gonna say it. I have an unhealthy crush on Shimono Hiro. 😂 If Suwabe Junichi didn’t voice Ren in UtaPri, Sho would be my bias even. HAHAHAHA. I’M SO SORRY, REN. I don’t know. Something about his nasally voice just gets me every time. It doesn’t matter what role it is, he makes me feel a lot of feelings. Complete boyfriend material right there. He doesn’t need to lower his pitch to sound sexy, too. I was on the floor during that bit where Shingo tells Ao-senpai the things he likes about him. I WANT A MAN LIKE THAT! 😭😭😭 AND OML THAT LAST ROMP ON HIS BED WHEN AO-SENPAI CAME OVER??? YO, UCHIDA MOVE OVER. KING HAS COME!!! AHAHAHAHA. I feel sorry for that bed tbh. 😂 He didn’t have to go at it that hard!
I mean, he is one of my favorite ukes and many of his BLCDs where he voices one are my favorites of all time, but yaoi gods, please, please, please cast him in more seme roles and R18 Otome CDs. 🙏
As for Masuda Toshiki—I find it peculiar that I still know his voice even though it’s been ages since I’ve heard him lead in a BLCD. I guess that just means that his voice is that distinct. 👏👏👏 He did Ao-senpai here just as well as he did him last time, which I totally expected from him because I haven’t really heard him under perform before. I wish he’d do stuff up in my alley more often. And more stuff with Shimono Hiro please because that chemistry’s to die for!!!
I didn’t want to spoil myself on what’ll happen in the sequel, so I didn’t look at the complete cast list just in case there were any third parties. Can you believe how much of a good girl I’ve been for not reading the raws until I got the BLCD??? But nothing could have prepared me for the revelation that Ono Yuuki was going to be the third party! Are we seriously doing this?! Y’all are going to make him get his heart broken?! Why would you?! Where was the need?! Of course, I was going to cheer for him and Ao! I hate you Marble. I fell right into that trap. 😂 However, I’m glad that Takeo-senpai didn’t confess or made Ao choose him because at that point, he and Ao weren’t that close yet. I loved how SuzuMinta made him just chuck those little feelings for Ao to him just being overly competitive, but it still made me a little sad. I’m so torn. Give the man a sequel! 😭😭😭
Speaking of third parties, I’m quite surprised that Kirato didn’t actually have feelings for Ao in the manga unlike the first BLCD. I haven’t really read the first volume up until yesterday, so I was surprised that Kirato didn’t act like he liked him in the second BLCD. I’m sure that I wasn’t mistaken when I listened to the first CD because it left such a huge impact on me. Hmm. Better listen to the first one again later. In any case, they did change a lot of the dialogue, but there’s nothing major. Reading it would be easy still. Also, can I just say that I wanted to see how things were going to turn out with Hodaka and Yae-chan?! Been a while since I’ve shipped a straight couple in a BLCD. 😂 Come on, SuzuMinta, you gotta give us more than a double date at some family resto. It’s a double date between Yuuji and Kirato and Hodaka and Yae-chan, change my mind. HAHAHA.
If you’re in for something light but with a twang, then I’d definitely recommend this and it’s prequel. Y’all seriously need to hear Shimono Hiro as a top—it’s a gratifying experience. 😂 This is another good example of a BLCD where the seme has a higher pitch than the uke and Shingo was actually even shorter than Ao in the first volume, so that’s two stereotypes down (even though Shingo grows taller than Ao in the second one). If anyone wants to scanlate this and wants me to help translate hmu!
BLCD Review: Sweet to Yobu ni wa Mada Hayai
Title: Sweet to Yobu ni wa Mada Hayai (SWEETと呼ぶにはまだ早い)
Author/Artist: Masui
Release Date: 2019/03/20
Cast: Furukawa Makoto x Ono Yuuki
Synopsis: Kagawa, a newbie patisserie, gets chases out of the home he shares with his girlfriend with the latter saying that she has found a new man. Frustrated and with no place to go home to, Kagawa thinks that all is lost, but suddenly, his co-worker, another skilled, but brash patisserie, invites him to his home!
Review Proper
Yo, I tried to like this—I really did, but it was just so generic and boring that I honestly fell asleep in the middle of a lot of tracks. Imagine how many times I had to re-listen to this. 😂 It doesn’t have a good flow of plot, the author makes it painfully obvious that they’re just forcing the “coincidences” to happen so that the characters get to have an excuse to interact. The comedy is just as forced, too. Take Kagawa’s choice of wardrobe for example. It’s supposed to be the running gag of this series, but it’s quickly thrown out the window when they go shopping. It’s so unnecessary. They could have done without it.
I don’t like any of the characters either. Haga is borderline criminal, immature, and manipulative while Kagawa’s only personality trait is being as dumb as rocks (Dekoboko Sugar’s Rui says hi). Man, there’s really nothing I hate in this world than ukes without spinal columns. Kagawa does protest in the beginning, but he’s literally “well, I guess this is my life now” right after. Boy is u a sheet of paper?!
IT’S ALMOST 2020 FOLKS—A GODDAMN DECADE AND WE STILL ON THIS ISH?!
Doesn’t help the fact that I just came from Dekoboko Sugar and Kurui Naku. *sigh*
Moving onto the voice work,
I was really skeptical about this casting at first, I mean, I have an issue with Ono Yuuki bottoming, but I think he can handle bottoming better than Furukawa Makoto lol. Anyway, it did kinda sound too airy for him in the beginning, but it grew on me after a short while. Ono Yuuki did great as Lili in Coyote, but his voice was deeper then than his performance here. Dare I say, this is the most comfortable Ono Yuuki has been in a high-pitched bottom role. HE SQUEAKS NOBODY TOUCH ME It was too good that it’s honestly such a waste for it to be used in this thing. 😩
Furukawa Makoto used his Shida-kun voice here and it actually matched the role perfectly. But again, as with Ono Yuuki’s, his performance does not deserve to be used in something like this.
How was their chemistry here, you ask? Idk if it’s just me, but they kinda aren’t that in sync with each other. Like I said in the beginning of this review, I fell asleep multiple times listening to this, and one of the parts I fell asleep on was their bed scene (yo, Kagawa didn’t want to go all the way and Haga didn’t give a shit call the fucking police!). I listened to it again after waking up, but they still sounded weird. Were they recording separately? Who knows. 🤷
So we have lack-luster/generic plot for the manga, pretty great voice work but weird chemistry, all that’s left to discuss now is it’s faithfulness to the manga. Well, I knew this had a complete English translation, but it seems to have been taken down, so I opted to read the Spanish one instead. For a BLCD that had a lot of added dialogue, they sure weren’t able to describe their pastries well. I mean, isn’t that the main highlight of this series? It would be very hard to listen to this BLCD on it’s own, but even if you coupled it with reading the manga, it would be just as hard to catch up with the dialogue since there are a lot of adlibs.
Overall, this was a very poor adaptation and it might actually just be one of the worst of this year—not even Ono Yuuki and Furukawa Makoto (or any veteran voice actors) can save this. I don’t recommend this, but you do you. If you want to listen and read to something slightly similar to this, then do try Tenzen Momoko’s Boulange no Koibito. We have Morikawa Toshiyuki and Sugiyama Noriaki playing the leads, plus the leads’ relationship is way healthier than Haga and Kagawa’s.
BLCD Review: Rakka Ryuusui no Hoshi
Title: Rakka Ryuusui no Hoshi ( 落花流水のホシ)
Author/Artist: Suzumura Minta
Release Date: 2019/05/29
Cast: Hatano Wataru x Saitou Souma
Synopsis: Kuze Akihito is living alone in his house and takes men as visitors during the night. When an officer named Sumeragi Goutarou is assigned to be his guardian, all these men stopped coming and Akihito seemed unhappy...? Later on, Goutarou learned the reason behind Akihito's loneliness and thus their life of living together take a turn into something else.
Review Proper
I just have to say that out of the three of SuzuMinta’s works, this is the only one that I felt was a little...off? In my personal opinion, Gou’s feelings were a little shallow for me, and Akihito obv loved him more than Gou did him. And I was really confused when Akihito says that they were dating after Gou kissed him, like, boi when did y’all talk about going out??? How did “be conscious of me” and “you got me” equate to “I’ve have become this person’s boyfriend”? What I miss? I also didn’t like how he lashed out at Akihito when he was jealous—I mean, the fuck was he gonna do? He wouldn’t know about those things because he had 0 experience with them and it’s not like Gou talked to him about it either. 🤷 These kids are gonna give Kaoru and Hara-san a run for their money; their communication issues are way worse than theirs. 😂
Ya know, with a synopsis like that, I’d figure that we were going to have some fucked up reason as to why Akihito lets those men have their way with his body. I’m not saying that him losing his parents does not afford such a level of grief, but rather than giving a concrete reason, he just says that no one cares what he does anyway and that those guys just wanted to have fun. No where in the rest of the manga does it ever state how that all started, why it had to be sex, and why it had to be men. I think this was poorly executed ngl. If y’all want something similar that goes into depth about one of the lonely parties’ trauma and how they cope with it, try reading Saezuru Ogawa Chise’s Oita ga Sugiru wa Koneko-chan (I’m mad this doesn’t have a BLCD), or listening to Sweet Delivery Boy (someone make this into a manga please). I did like it despite all of that, but I think that it’s because I read it while listening to the BLCD.
Which brings us to our next point,
To the person who thought of pairing Hatano Wataru and Saitou Souma up again, thank you. You’re an angel. Honestly, I had to do a double take because Saitou Souma didn’t sound like himself in the beginning which was strange because I just listened to Theo before this. I thought that he would have to be around Theo’s range, but for some reason, in the first two tracks, it was a deeper voice. Hatano Wataru used a higher voice while Saitou Souma used a voice two degrees and later just one degree deeper than what they used in Me wo Tojite. Their pairing is magic, I tell you. I also gotta hand it to Saitou Souma because he’s literally walking with the big men rn. Shingaki Tarusuke, Wacchan, Maeno Tomoaki, and Okitsu—there’s nowhere to go but up for this man. Furukawa Makoto is crying in a corner 👏👏👏 Oh my God, Shingaki, Wacchan, and Okitsu (Okitsu has the most) had several go’s with this man already. No wonder, he’s so good now. 😂
SPEAKING OF VETERAN VOICE ACTORS
FUKUJUUUUUNNNNNN!!!! 😭😭😭
I didn’t notice that he was part of the cast! When Akihito’s uncle came into the scene, I was so shook! His voice here was like Rin’s in Shokugyou no Ouji! 😭😭😭 A moment of silence for my partitioned external drive. Anyway, that aside, I kinda ship Akihito’s uncle and Gou HAHAHAHA I mean, he’s just so prettyyyyyy Imagine him and Gou in a prostitute finds love and freedom! OMG! Also, just how fucked up am I to want this? Cheska, you grow worse with age. 😂
So we’ve got a poorly executed plot for the manga itself, magical voice work (matress mambos were 🔥🔥🔥), and fair loyalty to the original content. This hands down has the best casting out of all SuzuMinta’s works (sorry, Shimono Hiro and Masuda Toshiki), so I’d definitely recommend checking this out. Do read the manga along while you’re at it for added hype. 👍
BLCD Review: Nights Before Night
Title: NIGHTS BEFORE NIGHT
Author/Artist: Natsume Kazuki
Release Date: 2018/12/19
Cast: Ono Yuuki x Nojima Hirofumi I had hoped for a world where I wouldn’t hear Shigure-san and Haru fuck, but such a world doesn’t want to exist.
Morikawa Toshiyuki x Nojima Hirofumi
Ono Yuuki x Nojima Hirofumi
Saitou Souma
Synopsis: The death of me.
Review Proper
Bitch, I’m weak.
I don’t even know what to say.
I really didn’t expect (I did, but I didn’t want to) that Natsume Kazuki was going to provide us with that kind of backstory. I’ve been putting off both the BLCD and the manga for so long (this was released last year and I’ve had the manga since November and the BLCD since early February) because of this fear, but I think it was high time that I gathered all my balls to finally listen to it. My selfish ass waited for someone to upload the raws so that I wouldn’t need to open my own copy but nooooo the internet just wanted to act up and I had no choice but to open mine. Had I waited for the raws to load, I would’ve put the BLCD down and would have postponed it again.
What a great life people who haven’t heard/listened to Nights Before Night must live. 😩 If I had a dollar for all the times this experience broke my heart, I would have enough money to go to the gym. There’s like a void in my heart and I could feel the air rush through it sometimes. It’s actually been a month since I’ve listened to both Hinadori and Nights and I’ve planned to put the reviews up right after I listened to them, but I just couldn’t move on from what happened in NBN and I couldn’t bear the thought of having to recall the events as I type my review down.
This is probably the hardest review I’ve ever had to make.
ANYWAY.
I don’t want to discuss the plot any further because I might just cry I want you all to experience that yourselves.
So we’re going to jump into the technicalities now.
The plot execution was great. They followed the manga to a T. Props to Marble Records for keeping the good streak up. 👏👏👏 The CD itself was quite long and it did the pacing justice - If you plan to listen to this, I suggest that you listen to only this on that day. You may think that you’d want to immediately jump into fluff something else after that, but trust me, nothing will register into your brain after listening to this BLCD.
On the topic of voice acting, I really don’t have much to say other than praises because boy, these people don’t play around. I have to suck it up suck it up I WANNA CRY OMG I CAN’T applaud Nojima Hirofumi for being able to have fantastic chemistry with OKAA-SAN 😭😭😭 both Morikawa Toshiyuki and Ono Yuuki. I still did find his voice a little low to the point of hearing the strain in it, but it’s definitely better than when he did Flaver. I’m still adamant about saying that he’s more suited to being an uke. As for Morikawa...
This isn’t what I meant when I said that I wanted to hear more of him. Not like this, man. Not like this. I have another CD of his in my next log tho. I hope it heals my aching heart.
Ono Yuuki, on the other hand, was the man, the martyr, the saint. I love how he voiced Yukitaka here because it was a lot like how he’d done Kuroko no Basuke’s Kagami and I personally think that that range suits him the best and he manages to use it to it’s full potential. His previous seme roles that I’ve listened to were mostly “gentleman on the sheets, but a freak in the sheets” roles and I really prefer his rougher/wilder roles over those. That reminds me, why the hell is Ono Yuuki up for ‘second man’ roles because he’s also the one who voiced Wonder Border’s Hiroharu (actually he was the ex, but you get the idea)? STOP IT, ONO. MY HEART CAN ONLY TAKE SO MUCH. But of course, this was much better than Wonder Border because Yukitaka wasn’t an asshole. I also think that this is by far, Ono Yuuki’s best performance in 2018. Better than DakaOtoko and Coyote. 👍
We’ve got great plot execution, truthfulness to the manga, great voice work, and chemistry. This is definitely up there in my list of the Best BLCDS of 2018. It’s probably even in second place only to be behind Kashikomarimashita, Destiny (what a fucking surprise). You can definitely read the manga along with listening to the BLCD - wait, I IMPLORE you to read it along for maximum pain. I mean, we’re all going to die anyway, might as well cartwheel to it. 👍 I just pray that Seraphic Deviltry can finish translating the series so that a lot more people can read and hopefully listen to this masterpiece. 🙏
