Happy Birthday to Marc Almond 🖤 @marcalmondofficial Born Peter Mark Sinclair Almond in Southport, Lancashire he met Dave Ball at Leeds Polytechnic in 1977 where he was studying performance art and after a year or so they formed the synth-pop duo Soft Cell, who first attempted recording an EP titled Mutant Moments which was not well received in the charts. They then signed to the Some Bizzare record label with the release of the No. 1 hit single cover of “Tainted Love”, later released on the critically acclaimed and commercially successful debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. The album includes the classic hit song “Sex Dwarf”. The video is still banned from being shown on UK television for its controversial and seedy content. Marc Almond became a fan of Marc Bolan after hearing him on The John Peel Show, buying the T. Rex single “Ride A White Swan”. From then on, he "followed everything Marc Bolan did” and it was his obsession with Bolan that prompted him to adopt the “Marc” spelling of his name. Jacques Brel became a major influence after he discovered him through another huge influence, David Bowie. And the synth-punk duo Suicide is also an obvious influence. Marc has been described as the Poet Laureate of sleaze with his sexually ambiguous performances. His offshoot band Marc and the Mambas had a constantly changing lineup including Matt Johnson from The The. He was also a member of the short lived collaborative group The Immaculate Consumptive initiated by Lydia Lunch and included Nick Cave and JG Thirlwell (Jim Foetus).
