Welcome to a very special edition of The Pace Report featuring jazz guitarist Grant Green Jr. performing at the famed Jazz Standard in NYC.
Resonance Records recently released two rare live performances of jazz legend Grant Green, "Slick! Live at Oil Can Harry's" recorded on September 5, 1975 in Vancouver, Canada and "Funk In France" recorded in a studio in Paris and the Antibes Jazz Festival in 1970.. Both of these live recordings were released on vinyl and CD and is on i Tunes.
Grant Green was born on June 6, 1935 in St. Louis, Mo and was hailed as one of the inventors of Soul Jazz. Discovered by saxophonist Lou Donaldson, he was recommended to Alfred LIon, president and co-founder of Blue Note Records. While on the label he became a proficient leader and top session musician on the label backing the likes Larry Young, Hank Mobley, Ike Quebec, and Stanley Turrentine.
Grant during the late 1960's until his death changed his playing style which included other musical styles like rock, funk, and world music.
Grant's son took part in a week-long event centering around the legacy of his dad by playing the famed Jazz Standard for the double releases of Resonance Records Grant Green live recordings. He was backed by Monte Croft on vibes, Marc Cary on B3 and Keys, Khari Simmons on bass, Donald Harrison on Alto Saxophone, and Mike Clark on drums.
