Hiya!
Please infodump to me about Marcel Gotlib as I’m not as familiar with him (mostly cuz I am, ofc, a silly English person lol) please?
am asking as I don’t know much about him other than knowing that he’s a French National Icon 🇫🇷 cuz he did comic books or smth lol, so I would gladly love to listen to you (my fellow French moot <33) talk about him for hours on end 🥰❤️!!
Hope you don’t mind!!
(also cuz i saw you mention him in one of my MP photo dump asks, so am really interested to know a bit more about him since you seem to love him aLOT haha ❤️❤️❤️)
YES ! HAHA SO GLAD YOU ASKED
Marcel Gotlib was a comic book writer. He started his work as a scenarist and illustrator in the 60s and he joinded the redaction of Pilote (a famous comic book magazine for children directed by René Goscinny the man who created Asterix with Albert Uderzo (I love them too but it's another story)).
With Goscinny he created Les Dingodossiers a publication of very absurd humor with many iconic characters (Isaac Newton, the ladybug...).
He then created Rubrique-à-brac alone, bit still with Pilote. It's very much like Les Dingodossiers but it can get even stranger.
He then left Pilote because he wanted to do something for adults (still funny but DISCLAIMER EXTREMELY GORE AND FULL OF SEX). Goscinny was against any kind of vulgarity in Pilote so Gotlib did feel he had to create something different : Fluide Glacial (another magazine).
He creates Superdupont, Rhââ lovely and Pervers pépère. ( not for kids )
He died in 2016 after stopping the publication of Superdupont because it had been used by very nationalist politicians to justify their racism.
His humor is quite close to MP. It doesn't make any sense and I LOVE IT. (I basically learnt how to read with Asterix, Lucky luke, les Dingodossiers so they are very IMPORTANT for me)
He was a big MP fan and he did the poster for "And now for something completely different" Thanks for asking @yonderghostshistories !

My Thoughts on BD Artists
Andre Franquin: Influential AF. He is extremely good at making cute/hot characters! Gaston, for example is cute and hot, making him..."hute"?
Marcel Gotlib: Basically Shadbase before Shadbase (Shad's content is worse tho.)
Tome & Janry: I STILL don't forgive them after they made Le Petit Spirou a thing. Like, the concept is fine, but PLEASE DON'T TURN MY BOI SPIROU INTO MINETA MINORU FFS!!!
Jije: One of the pioneers of the Spirou franchise. (He was also the influence to Franquin's early S&F content.)
Herge: Another influential artist. His artstyle is so smooth, I can't believe it's not butter!
Yoann: Before he officially made it to the Spirou bandwagon, he was also responsible for making an adaptation to Franquin's Idees Noires. I like his artstyle because it attempts to stay true to the originals.
Pierre Seron: The Wal-Mart version of Andre Franquin. Unlike Franquin's magical techniques of making EVERYBODY attractive, 91% of his female characters look ugly AF. Plus, his comics also have racist motifs, which make me very uncomfortable. (That aside, Regis Renaud is hot...ONLY because he's a Gaston lookalike.)
Peyo: Or as I like to call him, "The Smurf God". He has a very catchy artstyle! I don't have a problem with him, but he has been rumored to be sexist, so yeah...sexism is a no no, sir!
Marc Hardy: His style is unique. I like his portrayal of dark humor tho.
Jidehem: His style is identical to Franquin's, but his series are unforgettable, and his character designs are cute AF!
