Identification: The A. belladonna grows from bulbs about 5-10 cm in diameter. The leaves are about 30-50cm long and very thin; about 2-3 cm wide. These are produced in the autumn but disappear in the spring. Then, during the summer, a bare stem grows from the bulb to around 30-60 cm in height on which the flowers grow in clusters. The flowers are funnel-shaped, scented, ranging from white to pink and purple, and usually about 6-10 cm large. It has 3 outer sepals and 3 inner petals.
Information: The Amaryllis belladonna belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae, but is often confused with Hippeastrum hybrids. It is a bulbous flowering perennial. In its natural environment, it has a symbiotic relationship with carpenter bees.
Growing Tips: The Amaryllis belladonna requires full sun. In a container, the bulbs should be planted just below the surface while they are dormant. The soil should be well-drained to slightly moist. They require regular watering during the growing season and less while it is dormant.
