Spectacular backyard #liverwort living happily between the cracks of our brick patio. #marchantiapolymorpha #gemmacups
So excited! I just found liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha) in my parents' backyard! The little structures shaped like palm trees are the archegonia (female parts) that contain the eggs of the plant. This species can reproduce both sexually and asexually. . #marchantiapolymorpha #backyardnature #liverwort #bryophyta
Another of the many forms of #marchantiapolymorpha, the same #liverwort I posted yesterday. Not only does it have divergent male and female sporophytes, the baby "gemmae" are found in little "nests" which are adhered to the rock with suctioncup-like rhizoids. Is this not one of the coolest plants ever?
This liverwort also reproduces asexually. Pictured are the (adorable) gemma cups of the liverwort (as modeled by the tiny spider). When raindrops fall into the gemma cups, the gemmae splash out, dispersing and making new liverwort. . #marchantiapolymorpha #liverwort #scicomm #nature #naturephotography #bryophyta
