Three years ago, Ivy gave birth to a little girl they named Grace. Grace Syverson was a little mini Ivy and the older she got, the more she resembled her mother.
It hadn’t been an easy pregnancy, as it was rough on Ivy. It pained Sy to see her like that. Sure, he had his worries, his sorrows about it, however he swallowed them because he needed to be strong for Ivy. Strong for his family.
Right after she gave birth to Grace, the feared post party depression didn’t happen. She didn’t run away, like she was so afraid of. She loved the little girl with all her heart, just like the girls all adored Grace and helped out the best they could. It eased Sy’s mind, to see all of his girls so helpful.
But the truth be told: he had been officially outnumbered by five sassy ladies. With Ivy as the queen of sass, Erin a close second and Aurora and Clover are learning quickly. And little Grace is only three years of age and has the judgmental eyebrow raise and purse of her lips totally mastered. She takes after her mom completely.
There was just one major difference between Grace and her sisters. While Erin, Aurora and Clover were sassy, they knew exactly when to behave and when to have respect for authority.
Grace not so much.
And it was clear Ivy didn’t exactly blame her, because the women working at the Pre-K were pretty annoying and had their incapable moments, but Sy kept telling her they needed to tell Grace how to behave, even when she doesn’t agree with something.
But it was so hard to tell that girl off, especially when she’s so darling and cute. Her large brown eyes, her pout and the sweet little waves in her hair. It’s also like Ivy makes his job as being a disciplinarian a whole lot harder, because she dresses Grace in the most adorable dresses, with matching shoes and pigtails.
She does it on purpose, he just knows it.
After a long day of hard work in the sun and a wonderful dinner made by Erin and Aurora, it’s time to go to sleep. The young ones were already put to bed, but after the tiring day he had, Sy is ready to call it quits not long after them.
‘I’m really looking forward to go to the beach tomorrow,’ Ivy says, as she changes into something more comfortable for the night.
Sy worried about having a sixteen year old as the oldest and a three year old as the youngest, however that was proven to be a useless fear. Erin loved being with her family and Grace adored the presence of her older sisters. ‘Me too,’ he said, already in bed in just his boxers. ‘I take it I have bag sitting duty.’
Ivy smiles and he falls in love all over again. ‘Yes, you do,’ she tells him. ‘Duh.’ She crawls underneath the blankets with him and presses a kiss on his lips. ‘Everything is packed and ready to go?’ Ivy double checks.
He nods. ‘Darlin’, I’ve been in the military long enough to have excellent packing skills.’
‘Hm,’ she says, appearing unimpressed, though it’s just her way of teasing him.
Thank the universe for AC, because despite it being murdering hot outside, she still wants to curl up against him. ‘Good night, cappie.’
Years have gone by and finally—finally—he can accept the horrendous nickname. ‘Good night,’ he says, after pressing a sweet kiss on her forehead.
She’s quick to drift asleep. Just like anyone could’ve expected from her, she’s a rowdy sleeper, constantly twisting and turning, kicking him in his sleep. It’s funny really how she only does that around him. When Grace was a baby and slept in between them, Ivy moved so little, Sy checked her pulse on occasion, just to be sure she was still among them.
When Sy is finally entering dreamland, he hears the door open. Soft little footsteps make their way over to his side of the bed. ‘Papa,’ Grace whispers. Sy and Ivy have no clue why she calls him papa, while the other girls call him dad, but it’s an adorable trait. ‘You up?’
‘Yes, I’m up. What’s wrong, angel?’
‘Can’t sleep.’
He sighs. ‘Why not?’
She leans closer to his ear. ‘I’m scared.’
With one arm he hoists her up in the bed and pulls her in a safe embrace. ‘I’ll protect you,’ he tells her. ‘Papa always protects you, right?’
‘Right?’
Ivy turns to her side, a little bit awake and smiles. ‘Hi darling,’ she says, placing her hand on Grace’s back, who’s curled up on Sy’s chest. She gives the little girl a kiss on her temple, before placing her head on Sy’s shoulder. ‘Scared?’
‘Yes mommy.’
‘I’m so sorry,’ she whispers. ’Good thing papa’s here to protect you.’
‘Papa always protects me,’ Grace whispers, before she drifts off to sleep, as she feels one hundred percent safe in the presence of her parents.
’She’s so cute,’ Ivy admits. ‘Can’t believe we made her.’
‘One hundred percent me,’ Sy chuckles, though it’s super obvious the little girl totally takes after her mother. The only thing Grace inherited from her dad, is the slight waves in her hair, but other than that: Grace is miniature version of Ivy.
‘Yeah right,’ Ivy mutters, too tired to put up a fight. She places her head on his shoulder and whispers: ‘Good night, my big idiot.’
‘Shut up.’
‘Bye.’
