Chapter 14 A Deal With the Devil
After breakfast the next morning, Marcus left for the Flavian Palace, still on a high from his accepted proposal. You're going to be his wife! Every time he thinks about it his stomach does a little flip. All he has to do now is inform the emperors of his intended nuptials and he can begin preparations. As his horse thunders along the dirt road towards the city, Marcus takes in his surroundings with a sense of inner peace. It's as if the whole world has changed over night. He's taken this route countless times, seen the same old scenery, but today the expansive green fields and endless wildflowers seem more vibrant somehow. Everything is more significant and he knows it's because of you, he feels it, deep in his bones. At the entrance to the Flavian Palace Marcus dismounted, entrusting his horse to a guard while informing another that he seeks urgent audience with the emperors. Marcus is lead to the Aula Regia (throne room) where he's left to await Geta and Caracalla, fighting the urge to pace. What's taking them so long?
Two large doors groan open causing Marcus to turn in their direction. "Acacius," Geta says with faked enthusiasm, strolling into the throne room. Caracalla is beside him with that damn monkey on his shoulder. "To what do we owe the honour?" Marcus bows his head as the two men stood before him. "Your Graces, I apologise for the sudden intrusion but I thought it necessary to tell you both immediately..." He took a studying breath, "I am to be wed." Both men gawped at Marcus, their eyebrows raised high, then to each other in surprise. "Well... that was unexpected," Caracalla said after a moment. "Yes," Marcus agreed, "And as your General I know my marriage is a matter of the state and you must be made aware before anyone else." Dondus began to fuss on Caracalla's shoulder, drawing his eyes away but he still spoke. "So, who is the deserving lady?" "Alia," Marcus answered. Caracalla's head snapped back to Marcus while Geta stared at him like he'd grown another head.
After a beat of silence, Caracalla erupted into laughter. "Very amusing, Acacius!" Marcus kept a neutral expression causing Caracalla to stop abruptly, recognition clear on his face. "You can't be serious!" Geta spluttered. "I am." "No. I cannot have our General marry a Plebian," Geta said with a curl of his lip. "With all due respect Your Majesties, I didn't come here to seek permission. I simply came to inform you," Marcus replied cooly. He fully expected such a reaction. "You forget yourself, Acacius," Caracalla hissed. "You answer to us. Direct disobedience will end in your arrest and severe punishment." Marcus' eyes narrowed on Caracalla. "Do you believe that is wise? Imprisoning your General when Rome is edging ever closer to civil war. If your enemies catch even a hint of weakness they will use it to their advantage and rise up. It has happened before, you need me."
Geta and Caracalla's faces dropped at the same time. Marcus had to swallow back the smirk trying to sneak out. He's got them, and they know it. "You could always look at this as a political move," Marcus offered. If the emperors believe they can benefit from this, they'll be easier to sway. "How so...?" Geta asked sceptically "You have fragile alliances with many of the Germanic tribes. A marriage between an authoritative Roman figure to one of their own would be a demonstration of good will. This can only serve you well." "This is madness," Caracalla burst, making Dondus leap and squeal on his shoulder. "He does make a good point," Geta says reluctantly, looking to his brother then back to Marcus. "And what about the senate?" Caracalla went on. "They won't support this." Geta's face lit up. "Brother, speak with me privately," he interrupted, taking Caracalla by the arm and leading him far enough away so Marcus can't hear.
"You cannot seriously be considering this," Caracalla whispered harshly. "What will the senate think?" "Yes, what will the senate think?" Geta echoed his brother but with a half smirk. Caracalla regarded Geta with confusion. "The senators all look up to Acacius, respect him far more than they do us. We can change that. If we allow this union he'll lose all credibility in their eyes." Both men glanced over at Marcus, who watched their hushed conversation with a neutral expression. "He's much more influential than he realises and that could become a problem for us should he ever disagree with us on important matters." Caracalla's frown softened into a sly smile. "So... we discredit him, bring him down a notch. "Exactly," Geta smiled back.
"And it'll keep mother away from him." Geta's face hardened. "We've both seen how close she's been getting with Acacius since his return. She's up to something, I can feel it. I don't trust her." Caracalla pursed his lips, a pensive look crossing his face. "You're right..." he said after a moment. "So we agree...?" Geta asked. "We agree," Caracalla nodded. Marcus remained still as the emperors approached him, his chin held high. "You make a very compelling arguement Acacius," Geta spoke, his tone even. "We approve." "Congratulations, General. We look forward to attending the wedding," Caracalla added. Marcus hid his surprise at how quickly they changed their minds. He was sure it would take more convincing on his part. "Thank you, Your Majesties. We look forward to receiving you." Marcus bowed and took his leave. High up on the balcony, behind a thick velvet curtain, Julia seethed, her knuckles white around the fabric being strangled in her grasp.
"Oh my goodness!" Cassia squealed when you'd told her of Marcus' proposal. She'd almost dropped the basket of linen she'd carried into your bed chamber in her excitement. Now that the emperors know - and more importantly - have given their blessing, it's official and it feels so good to not have to hide your feelings for Marcus any longer. Very soon - three weeks to be exact - you will show everyone just how much he means to you by joining hands in a lavish ceremony and you couldn't be happier. "That's fantastic news, Alia- I mean Domina," Cassia corrected herself, grinning. "Oh please, don't call me that," you laughed, shaking your head at the absurdity of such a title being bestowed upon you. "To you I'm simply Alia." Cassia smiled, setting the basket down on the lectus. "When is the wedding?" She asked, sitting next to you at the foot of the bed. "In three weeks." "So soon," she remarked, her eyebrows lifting in pleasant surprise. "We discussed it and we just want to start out life together as soon as possible," you explain, "and since we don't have to seek permission and a dowry from a Paterfamiliar (male head of a family) there's no reason to wait."
Cassia took both of your hands in hers. "I'm so happy for you both," she gushed. "Thank you, Cassia," you beamed, your smile as big as hers. "Marcus explained to me how the ceremony will go and what to expect, the customs and traditions and I wanted to ask you... if you'd like to be my bridesmaid." Cassia's jaw dropped, her face a picture of shock and excitement. "Of course, Alia! I'd love to... that's if the General approves. I am a servant after all." "And I am a former slave. If Marcus can bend the rules for me, I can for you." You give her a sneaky wink. "Besides, I already told him I want you to be my bridesmaid. He's fine with it." Cassia's grin returned, stirring a warmth in your chest. Only weeks ago you'd had nothing and no one in your life; hell, your life wasn't even your own to determine and now you have freedom, the love of an exceptional man and a genuine friend who is beginning to feel more like a sister to you.
Still holding hands, Cassia gives yours a squeeze. "In that case it would be an honour," she bubbled, her enthusiasm infectious. "Oh, the wedding planning..." she clapped her hands, surprising you. You found it impossible to hold back your amused laughter. "I'll help with whatever you need. I know the Dominus will have most of it taken care of but if you need a woman's opinion on anything, you can ask me," she said, proudly. Watching your friends' happiness on your behalf brought a lump to your throat and the heat of tears to your eyes. So, this is what it's like to have people care for you; genuinely care. Clearing the swell of emotion form your throat, your cheeks aching from smiling so much, you take her hand in yours. "Thank you, Cassia. I think I'm going to need all the help I can get."
The incessant pounding on the front door brought Macrinus out of his Tablinum (study). As he descended the stairs to the Vestibulum (entrance hall) a loud, authoritative voice carried through his home by the open door, insisting that it is a matter of urgency. "I'll fetch the Dominus at once," a servant, said. "No need. I'm here," Macrinus announced as he stepped into view. His face fell when he recognised Plinius, Julia's head guard and a cloaked, smaller person behind him. This can't be good. "Leave us," Macrinus ordered his servant. "In fact, tell all the servants to return to their rooms and remain there until further notice." "Yes, Dominus," the young man nodded and left. Macrinus kept an eye on the servants' retreat, ensuring he was out of earshot. "What are you doing here, My Lady?!" Macrinus hissed as he turned back to Julia and Plinius. "This is dangerous. If you're seen-" "This is important Macrinus!" Julia cut him off, stepping fully from behind Plinius. "We must speak privately, now. The situation is dire. We're at risk of losing everything!" Macrinus glanced around nervously. "Come!" he whispered urgently, gesturing to the Tablinium. "Wait here," Julia ordered Plinius and followed Macrinus up the stairs.
Quickly closing the tablinium door behind them, Macrinus turned to face Julia. "What the hell has happened?" "That bitch, that filthy harlot Julia spat, her face red with fury. "I don't know how how she did it, how she managed to sink her claws in so deep-" "What are you talking about?!" Macrinus could feel his patience wearing thin. "He's marrying her!" Julia exploded. Macrinus stilled, certain he must have misheard. "Acacius is going to marry Alia," Julia clarified, disgust dripping from her voice. "You're certain?" Macrinus asked. "I heard him myself, manipulating my sons for their permission... and they agreed!" Julia's voice rose in pitch. Macrinus sank down into his chair, a huff of disbelief leaving his lungs. "My god..." he muttered, lowering his head into his hands. "We must act now. We cannot allow this wedding to happen." Julia pushed. "Hold on..." Macrinus rose to his feet. "I know how you feel but we cannot rush this." He tried to reason.
Julia threw her hands up in exasperation. "We have no choice. If they wed it's all over for us. Don't you see that?!" "I do." Macrinus levelled Julia with a serious look. "But if we act impulsively, that's when mistakes are made and there can be no mistakes." Julia groaned, bringing her fingers to her temples. "This is a disaster, Macrinus. What about your agaitators? Aren't they supposed to be encouraging the unrest? What are we even paying them for if they can't rally the mob?" Macrinus sighed, "They are doing their job. Because of them the Praetorians are patrolling everyday now and soon they will be overwhelmed. My men are slowly turning the public against the establishment but it takes time-" "Which we are fast running out of," Juila interjected, standing with her hands on her hips. "There's still time." Macrinus' gaze drifted as he became more pensive.
"It will be months until the wedding. During the meantime I'll have my men take things up a notch. The more dissent there is on the streets, the easier it'll be to target Alia and make it look like an accident." Macrinus fixed Julia with a determined stare. "She will die before she has the chance to marry Acacius, trust me." Julia exhaled, shaking her head. "For our sake and the sake of my sons, I hope you're right."
The energetic buzz of the market is something you don't think you'll ever tire of. The call of the vendors, the hum of chatter and the echo of laughter along with the delicious aromas of various foods fill you with a sense of gratitude - that you get to be a part of this. To others it's just another day but to you it's freedom; to come and go as you please. Linking arms with Cassia, you peruse the many shops and stalls while Tiberius walks about 30 feet behind you, keeping a sharp eye. It feels a bit strange, knowing you every move is being watched. But it's something you're willing to do for Marcus' sake - even if it feels like overkill to you. As you and Cassia stroll casually, a loud trumpet immediately followed by a bellowing voice cuts through the center of the market, the words inaudible at a distance.
"What's all that about?" you ask Cassia, straining your neck to see over the gathering crowd. "Oh, that's just the Praeco (town crier)," Cassia replied. "They notify the public of important news and upcoming events." Out of curiosity you both draw closer to hear more clearly. An announcement for Floralia (festival of Flora, goddess of flowers) was declared with news of games and theatrical performances to soon begin throughout the city. Gosh, the Romans do love thier games, you thought to yourself, whimsically But the next announcement had your eyes almost bug out of your head. "Lastly, announcing the betrothal of our esteemed General Marcus Acacius to Lady Alia. More information will follow shortly." Many heads in the gathered crowd turned your way, some with astonished expressions, some smiling.
Stuck on the spot, you're unsure what to do; say something? Smile? Before you could think any more on it applause resounded throughout the crowd with many voices offering congratulations and well wishes. Fire burned your cheeks and your stomach did a nervous swoop. A comforting hand slid into yours. Beside you, Cassia smiled encouragingly at you, her presence grounding you and giving you strength. "Thank you," you smile coyly at the many strangers who seem genuinely happy for you. "Thank you so much, you're all very kind." After a moment of acknowledging the people around you, you and Cassia press on through the market, except now Tiberious' eyes weren't the only pair watching you. Wherever you walked people greeted and congratulated you as they passed. However, a few of the more affluent and higher class citizens subtly looked down on you. Meh, that's nothing new. Of course there will be some who dissapprove but those people and their opinions mean nothing to you.
"This is all a bit much. How did people find out? Marcus only told the emperors yesterday," you say under your breath to Cassia while approaching a butchers stall. "Word travels fast in the city," Cassia replies with a shrug. "You'll have to get used to it... And you'll have to get used to being referred to as My Lady from now on," she added, teasingly. Rolling your eyes, partly in amusement, and partly in embarrassment, you chuckle, "I don't think I'll ever get used to that one." That's not all you'll have to get used to; the bag of Denarius dangling at your side is another reminder of your drastic change in circumstances. You'd refused Marcus' kind offer at first but he insisted that, as his future wife what belongs to him now belongs to you and that includes his wealth. And you know just what to do with it; Marcus had enjoyed the Frikadellas you'd recently made him so much that you want to do it for him again. Having already purchased the other ingredients the meat was the last thing needed.
Thanking the butcher, you bag the meat, preparing to leave the market. Tiberius keeps pace behind you as you and Cassia stroll towards the market entrance where the carriage waits nearby. "Lady Alia!" an elderly woman's voice rings out from a stall on your right. "For you, My Lady," she beams, holding out a small ceramic vial. By the scent coming from there, it's obvious it's a perfume stall. "Oh, no thank you..." you offer her a polite smile. "I don't wish to purchase-" "It's a gift..." the woman smiles proudly. "In honour of your upcoming marriage to General Acacius. I created this fragrance myself and it would honour me greatly if you'd wear it on your wedding day." The old woman's kindly face and short height gave off a sweet grandmother vibe and it tugged at your heart. "The honour would be mine," you assure her, taking the vial and lifting the lid. It's fruity sweet scent reminded you of early spring mornings.
"It's beautiful. Thank you so much." The woman looks like she's about to burst with pride with your compliment. Giving her another smile you place the vial in your bag and continue on your way. Cassia gasped as you grabbed her hand and burst into a power walk. "What are you doing?" she laughed as she sped up beside you. "Escaping..." you said under hushed tones, trying not to laugh, "Before anyone else can stop us." All across the city, news of the engagement spread rapidly with many more Praecones heralding from street corners, markets and temples. On the Via Sacra (The Sacred Way; main street of the city) a large crowd had gathered to hear the news. Murmurs of surprise rippled through the crowd before it began to disperse moments later. However, one person remained; a lone man, shrouded in a hooded cloak, only the lower half of his pock marked face visible. He approached the Preaco - who eyed him cautiously - and held out an open pouch of coins. "Tell me everything you know about Alia and the General.
As the evening sun bathed the city in it's late rays, the man carefully steered himself towards the outskirts of the city, winding through the dingy alleys and backstreets until he came to an Inn that had seen better days. The inside was dim and reeked of sweat and stale straw but it's location provided the perfect hideout. He sat at a round table with six other men, who watched him expectantly. Pulling his hood down, his frosty blue eyes lifted to the men as he picked up his cup of Ale and took a large swig. Placing the cup back down, a dark smirk slithered across his face. "We've found her." A scraggly haired man looked sceptical. "You're sure it's her?" "Without a doubt," the man answered, confidently. Another man, a tall, lanky red haired exhaled. "And how are we supposed to get to her now, Bardulf? We came all this way, spent days searching these slums for her, just to discover she's living the high life and out of reach." Bardulf's gaze hardened. "She'll never be out of reach for me."
"So it's true? What we've been hearing?" A third man, a blond with a cloudy eye piped up, "She's actually marrying that General she helped escape?" Bardulf released a humourless laugh. "It would appear so." "Disgusting!" Redhaired spat. "She's a slave. How can she wed a General of all people?!" "Keep your voice down!" Bardulf hissed, throwing a glance over his shoulder at the occupied tables. "You don't know who's listening." "Maybe she really is a Seer..." a younger man with a patchy brown beard mused. "How else could she orchestrate such a union?" "Don't start that shit again!" A dark haired man next to him smacked the kid upside the head. "Why did you bother to come with us if you fear her?" "I don't fear her," he grumbled, grabbing his cup and looking away as he drank. "So, what's the plan, Bard?" a man with brunette hair in braids asked, cutting off the squabbling Bardulf sighed in vexation.
"I'm not sure yet. She seems well known throughout this city, so we can't just apprehend her and dissappear It would draw too much attention. We need to get her alone." "That's going to be more difficult now she has her General protector," the blond man scoffed. "Damn it!" Bardulf slammed his fist on the table, rattling the cups. Frustration and anger coiled in his taut frame. "We just need to devise a new plan," he continued in a quieter voice. "We won't fail. She must pay for what she did." "And she will," Cloudy Eye said, his voice low. "Your father deserves justice. No matter how long it takes, we will find a way to her. We're all with you." Bardulf looked around the group as every man mumbled and nodded in solidarity. "Thank you," he exhaled, solemnly. "All of you. You honour my fathers' memory with your unwavering loyalty." Redhaired lifted his goblet. "To Adhelm!" "To Adhelm!" everyone at the table repeated, lifting their cups and taking a mouthful.
"Excuse me, gentlemen..." a middle aged, balding man spoke from beside the men. They all lowered their drinks, glaring at the stranger. "I couldn't help but overhear your ... interesting conversation-" "Just how much did you hear?!" Bardulf demanded, his hand going to the dagger in his belt. The others copied him, poised for trouble. Taking a step back, the man raised both hands in a placating manner. "I assure you there is no need for that. And to answer your question, I heard enough to believe I - or more specifically, my employer - may be of help to you." Bardulf regarded the man with trepidation. "Who is this man and why would he want to help us?" The man moved closer, lowering his hands. "I'm afraid I cannot divulge his name in public... but trust me when I say you have a shared interest." "Trust you," Bardulf sneered. "Why?" The man smirked. "Because he wants to be rid of this woman as much as you wish to get your hands on her." The men all fell silent, glancing at each other, then back at the stranger.
"Why does he want her out of the way? What does he get out of this?" Scraggly Hair asked, crossing his arms over his chest. The man shook his head. "Unfortunately, I'm not privy to my masters' reasons. If you wish to discuss this further with him, meet me in the alley behind the whorehouse two blocks away at sunset tomorrow night and I will take you to a secure location to meet with him. There, he will answer all of your questions." A bag of coins landed in the center of the table. "A gesture of goodwill, courtesy of my master. I hope to see you all tomorrow night." The messenger gave a quick nod then slinked out of the side door, leaving the bewildered men to digest what just happened.
Warm breath tickles the back of your neck, slowly bringing you back to the waking world. Marcus' arm is tucked around your upper body, pressing your back against his lazily rising and falling chest. The man is warm and comfy, slotting behind you so perfectly; like he was made just for this. In this moment there is nothing but pure bliss as you lay in the embrace of your lover and soon to be husband. You carefully shuffle deeper into his body, trying your best not to disturb him. You just want to be as close to Marcus as possible, to feel more of him and - Oh! He's hard. Marcus' thick shaft pressing into your arse cheek has your pussy instantly fluttering with desire. As if on instinct, you press your arse into his cock, your breath catching as it slides beneath your cheeks and between your folds.
The teeth clamping your bottom lip is the only thing supressing your need to moan. You'd happily spend eternity here with Marcus' length nestled between your lips. Wrapping your arm over his across your chest, you sigh and close your eyes. "What do you think you're doing?" Marcus' sleepy voice hums behind you with a hint of amusement. "Oh, I'm sorry..." you tease, pushing your hips further into his groin. "I didn't mean to wake you." Marcus' hand slid to your hip, keeping you pressed against him. "Darling, never apologise for giving me the best wake up call of my life," he rasped into you ear before pressing his lips behind your earlobe. Goosebumps rippled down your neck, a sultry moan escaping you and you arch into him again. Marcus chuckled darkly, the deep rumble reverberating through your back. His fingers trailed down your thigh to the hem of your nightgown and he lifted it up. Excitement coiled in your belly.
He splayed his hand on the flesh of your thigh and travelled up and across until his fingers met with the heat between your legs. "Oh, Marcus!" you breathed, opening your legs to allow him better access. Thick digits collected the moisture already seeping at your entrance, then slid to your clit, applying the perfect amount of pressure with slow sweeps. "Mmm...that feel good, sweetheart?" Marcus whispered against you neck. Between the deep, sensual timber of his voice and the expertise of his strokes, you're already close to the edge. "Mhm... yeah... don't stop," you say between breathless shudders. Marcus grinned, speeding up his ministrations just how you like it. His cock pulsed against your arse, precum leaving a trail across the cheek. Unable to control himself any longer he began rutting against you like an animal in heat, the swipe of his unsheathed head on your silky skin driving him mad with lust.
Your rising moans only spurred him on until your head flung back and you gushed all over his hand. "Good girl," he praised as he lined up his weeping cock at your entrance and slowly sunk into you. Marcus groaned at the tightness and warmth of your tunnel, the muscles gripping him as he began to thrust in and out. The sting of your fingernails digging into his arm added new heights to the pleasure scorching his blood. He pulled you tighter against him, both arms now locking you in place as he pounded away, one hand kneading your breast. Sweat began to gather on Marcus' forehead with every brutal snap of his hips. "Oh fuck, Marcus! Right there!" Your voice has taken on an almost begging quality now. Marcus likes it. "Yeah...?" he grunted. "Right... There?!" He punctuated each word with a devastating plunge of his cock. Tingles shiver through his balls; he's on the precipice now.
"Oh fuck, yes!" you wail loudly flinging your leg back over his thigh and reaching around to grip his arse. Marcus' head is swimming! Your skin, your cries, your scent, your walls squeezing him mercilessly; it's all too much! Marcus sinks his teeth into your shoulder (with enough restraint to not actually hurt you) as he works to bring you both to ecstasy. With your strangled cry he feels you fall apart around him, your release flowing warmth over his groin. A few more thrusts and Marcus follows you over the edge, his ears ringing and body crackling under the intense pleasure as his seed pulses into your cunt. The only sounds in the room now are your shared heavy breaths, matching in synchronicity as you both come back down to Earth.
Marcus nuzzles into your shoulder, tenderly kissing the spot where his teeth imprinted onto your skin only moments ago. "Feel free to wake me up like that every morning if you so wish, my little temptress," Marcus purred into your ear. The tickley sensation makes you giggle. You shuffle around so you are now facing each other, your arm sliding under his so you can stroke up and down his bare back and you give him a deep, sinful kiss. "I'll keep that in mind, My General."
The damp soil clings to your fingers as you potter around the flower bed, tilling and pruning the new buds that have become a labour of love for you. A gentle breeze picks up now and again, giving you some relief from the increasingly hot sun on your back. While your hands work methodically, your mind drifts, fantasies of your wedding day- wedding day! Something you never thought possible for you - occupying your thoughts. Your gown, how handsome Marcus will look, the ceremony where you'll bind your love for eternity. A soppy smile smothers your face the whole time. There are still moments where you found it hard to believe that a man such as Marcus Acacius would choose to spend his life with you. So consumed by your thoughts you didn't even notice Silas' approach until he was standing right beside you.
"My Lady, you have a visitor," Silas spoke.. "Oh, who is it?" Brushing the soil from your fingers, you rise from your knees. "Lady Julia Domina, My Lady." It took all of your strength to not to grumble, although you could not stop your smile from faltering. Urgh, what the hell does she want now? "Please inform her Marcus isn't here and won't be home for some hours yet." You were certain that would be enough to get rid of the woman. "I have, but she insisted on seeing you. She waits in the Triclinium." Of course, it wouldn't be that easy, you groaned inwardly, forcing your smile to return. "Thank you, Silas." Silas gave you a quick nod and returned to his duties. A quick inspection of your hands reveal dirt under your fingernails and then you notice two grubby patches on the front of your palla from where your had knelt. Brushing your hands over the fabric only removed the excess dirt.
Probably not the best condition to receive the mother of the emperors, but then again, she's the one who showed up unannounced. Without giving it another thought, you make your way to the Triclinium, where Julia sits as if she bloody owns the place. Cassia is serving her a goblet of wine as you enter. You smile and thank Cassia when she brings you a goblet too. "Lady Julia?" you greet her with an edge of questioning in your voice. "Alia..." Julia smiles thats practiced smile you're able to see right through. "I hope I'm not... uh... disturbing you," she says, looking down her nose at the mud stains on your clothes. "Not at all," you respond flatly, taking a seat on the lectus opposite hers. "Is there something I can do for you? I'm afraid you've missed Marcus. He left earlier." "Oh, that's a shame. I came to offer my personal congratulations to you both."
You bring the goblet to your lips, stifling the huff climbing it's way up your throat. As if she would ever be happy for you and Marcus. "Thank you, that's very kind. But you didn't have to come all this way." Julia waved her hand. "Oh nonsense," she laughed. "Two friends of mine getting married... That doesn't happen every day." Friends; that word is laughable coming from her mouth. Even Marcus had mentioned he'd noticed a change in her lately and, even though you didn't press the matter too much, he gave you the impression he didn't like said change. "And just between us ladies," Julia went on, "I'd like to offer some advice on being a dutiful wife." "Oh...?" you sat up straighter, raising an eyebrow at the audacity of this woman. Before you could say anything else, she continued, " You will not just be a Roman wife, but the wife of a Roman General. Everything you say or do will be under public scrutiny and as the widow of the former emperor, I know just how... unforgiving that can be."
"You will be a reflection of each other, so propriety and etiquette - especially from... someone like you-" she said, her tone dripping in judgement, "are of the utmost importance." "I know what to expect," you pointed out with narrowed eyes, your fingers digging into the stem of your goblet. "Marcus has explained everything to me. I may still be new to Roman society but I intend to fully embrace everything about this life and that includes my duties as a wife." Julia took a slow sip of her wine. "That's good to hear. It's just fortunate you'll have months to prepare yourself before the wedding-" "Months?" you interrupt Julia. "No, the wedding is in a few weeks." Julia's mask of benevolence slipped for just a moment, a storm gathering in her eyes. But she swiftly replaced it with a look of mild surprise. "Oh, I see. That's unusually fast," she said, her voice sounding strained. You shrug your shoulders. "We have the emperors' blessing, so we see no reason to wait."
Julia nodded in agreement but her posture looked tense. "Well, I wish you the best. But I do have one concern." "You do?" Julia sat forward, placing her cup on a side table, then turned her full attention to you. "Please understand, as the dowager empress I must speak plainly as this affects Rome itself, but as your friend, I say this with the best intentions..." Oh, this doesn't sound good. You brace yourself for whatever horse shit she's going to spew now. "This union between you and Acacius is more than just a marriage, it's a political statement to the whole empire. The fact Marcus has chosen a foreign bride opens him up to more criticism than normal, so it is imperative you support him in every way possible. Your conduct since arriving has been less than adequate but we can change that, and I believe that elecution lesson could benefit you as your accent is still rather strong. A wife should be softly spoken and -"
"Enough, Julia!" You rise to your feet and slam your drink down on the side table, the wine sloshing over the side. So this is why she came here today; one last attempt to belittle and intimidate you. Fury, hot and volatile burns in your veins. You'll take no more nonsense from this bitch, empress or not! Julia's eyes widen at your reaction and in your peripheral you notice Cassia's head turn to observe the scene from her position against the wall. "From the moment we met you've looked down on me, offered me nothing but barbed words wrapped in sweetness and taken every opportunity to try and seduce Marcus." Julia's face dropped, her cheeks draining of colour. "You think I haven't noticed how you act around him, how you look at him and run your filthy paws over him-" "How dare you speak to me in such a manner!" Julia erupted, jumping to her feet, fury etched her face. Gone is the saccharine smile she always wears; a look of pure revulsion and hatred now glare your way. "You're nothing more than a lowly-"
"I know exactly what I am, but more importantly I know exactly what you are and thankfully, I don't have to tolerate your repulsive behaviour any more. When I become Lady Acacius you will show me due respect." Your whole body is trembling with rage and adrenaline now but damn, does it feel good to be brutally honest for once. Even more satisfying is Julia's priceless expression; the infuriated look of an overly confident, spoiled bitch who has just realised the game is up. You're certain if she possessed the power, she would call down fire from the heavens right now and burn you alive. "You will regret every word you just said to me you heathen whore!" Julia spat. "It is only out of love and affection for Acacius that I shall allow you to keep your tongue, but mark my words..." she pointed a finger at you, her tone becoming icy cold, "You will not get away with this disrespect so lightly."
A dry laugh burst from you. "Love! You have no idea what genuine love and affection is. I've witnessed you deceive others with false pleasantries with such ease, as if it just comes naturally to you but I see through the charade. For appearances sake, I will be civil and respectful to you in public, but as far as I am concerned, we have nothing more to say to one another. Now, please leave." Julia took a deep breath, her shoulders taut as she glared ominously at you. "I will not forget this conversation, Alia." She then stormed out of the room, slamming the door against the wall. As soon as the coast was clear, you released a long sigh and slumped down on the lectus. "Good heavens!" Cassia gasped, rushing to your side. "Are you alright, Alia?" "I can't believe I just said all of that," you murmured wide eyed but looking nowhere in particular.
Cassia lowered her voice, "She deserved it. She disrespected you in your own home and you made a stand." When you meet Cassia's gaze you see determination on her face but a part of you worries you may have gone too far. "But she's still the empress and Marcus' friend. I just hope this stays between Julia and I. I don't want to cause any issues between them." " I understand your concern..." Cassia took your hand in hers. "But maybe you should tell the Dominus. Empress or not, her conduct was inexcusable." You shake your head emphatically. "Marcus has enough to worry about without adding any domestic drama. No, what's done is done and I'd rather just forget about it now. Please, don't say anything to him." Cassia studied your face for a moment before reluctantly nodding her agreement. "If you believe that's for the best..." Your shoulders sagged in relief. "I do." Cassia gave your hand another squeeze. "Then he shall not hear it from me." "Thank you," you smile in return.
Cassia collected the goblets and half empty jug of wine and took them away, leaving you to your thoughts. Maybe it was foolish to stand up to such a powerful woman, maybe not, but in all honesty you can't bring yourself to regret it. All these weeks of sly digs and suppressed frustration came pouring out in your words, each truth lifting an invisible weight from your shoulders as you made it abundantly clear where you both now stand. Taking a deep, slow breath to calm the remaining adrenaline still lingering in your system, you make your way back to the peace and solitude of the Hortus.
"This had better not be for nothing," Julia warned Macrinus. The dank, musty odour and chilly temperature of the Catacombs sent shivers along her spine. The odd scurrying rat in the limited torchilight only added to her growing unease. "Who are these people anyway?" Macrinus tore his eyes from the door of the small chamber they waited in to Julia. "That's what we're here to find out, and if they can be useful to us." "I don't like this, trusting our fates to strangers. It carries too many risks," Julia fretted. Macrinus huffed. "We haven't many other alternatives now. If is true, if Acacius and Alia intend to wed so soon as you said, then we must explore other avenues, exhaust every option. These people..." Macrinus paused, as if trying to figure them out, "They know her. They've travelled far for her and we must know why."
A rap on the door cut off their conversation. "Come," Julia demanded. The door creaked open and in came a group of seven men, lead by Macrinus' man. The air grew thick with tension as the group observed the room, their hands coming to the weapons at their sides at the sight of several armed guards lining the far wall. Macrinus stepped forward. "Thank you, Linus,' he spoke to his man, who nodded and left the room, closing the door behind him. Giving his attention to the group before him, Macrinus plastered on his best, oily smile. "Thank you for meeting with us tonight, gentlemen. Please, make yourselves comfortable." Macrinus waved his hand at a couple of long stone benches. "We prefer to stand," Bardulf replied firmly, his eyes returning to the guards. Macrinus glanced over his shoulder to where the men were staring, then back to the nervous group. "I assure you they intend you no harm. As long as you pose no threat to us, they pose not threat to you."
After a few moments of intense silence, Bardulf raised a hand and the men dropped their hands from their hilts. "Allow me to make the introductions; My name is Macrinus and this is the Lady Julia Domina." The men sent silent nods of acknowledgement her way. "And who shall I address directly?" Macrinus added. Bardulf stepped forward, his back staight and shoulders pulled back. "I am Bardulf; son of Adhelm, slain chief of the Gutones..." Bardulfs expression darkened. "And that little bitch you've all been harbouring is responsible for his death. We're here to bring her to justice." "Ah yes," Macrinus drawled "We heard all about that -" "Why are we here?" Bardulf asked impatiently. "Straight to the point I see," Macrinus laughed dryly. "You're here because you're not the only ones who will benefit from the demise of this woman." Bardulf studied Macrinus and Julia with suspicion. "Why do you want her dead so badly?" Julia stepped closer. "Because her mere presence here is problematic for Rome. We need her out of the way."
Bardulf's eyes narrowed. "So why haven't you killed her yourselves? You seem more than capable." "That was the plan..." Macrinus answered. "Until we heard whispers that men from her homeland were seeking her out." "What exactly is your plan for her?" Julia cut in. Bardulf remained silent for a moment, distrust clear in his expression. Finally he answered, "We will capture her and bring her back to our village where she will be publicly tortured and executed." A satisfied smirk crept across Julia's face. "Well then, I believe we can be of help to you." Bardulf scoffed, crossing his arms "What makes you think we want your help?" "Because if you're serious about this, you're going to need assistance. You'd never make it out of the city with her on your own. Too many people know of her," Macrinus stressed. "Our men know every inch of this city; every old smuggling route, every back alley and abandoned tunnel. We can unsure you escape unnoticed," Julia added. "Why?" Bardulf cocked his head. "Why go through all this trouble when you could just kill her?"
"Killing someone is always a last resort. There are potential witnesses, silences to buy, but if she simply... dissappeared there would be nothing and no one to implicate us. We would be rid of her and you will have what you came for... You see...?" Macrinus grinned, his white glinting in the torchlight, "This way, we all win." Bardulf turned to his men, who were all murmuring amongst themselves. A few moments later they all turned to face Julia and Macrinus. "Very well," Bardulf acquiesced. "We accept your proposal." "Wonderful!" Macrinus exclaimed, giving one loud clap. "What is our next move?" Redhaired asked from behind Bardulf. "For now you need to keep a low profile," Macrinus glanced at every man in the group. "We have eyes on Alia; we know her every move at all times. Linus will keep you informed daily and when the time to strike comes my men will create a disturbance where you'll be able to capture her unseen. When you have her bring her here to these catacombs. Our people will be waiting here to escort you safely out of the city under the cover of darkness... You have our word, gentlemen. This will work," Macrinus proclaimed, offering his hand.
Bardulf stepped closer and shook Macrinus' hand firmly, both men mirroring each other with sickening grins. "We will remain at the Inn, awaiting further instructions," Bardulf said. "Excellent!' Macrinus beamed, looking sideways at an equally pleased Julia. "This concludes our meeting. Linus will keep you informed. Until the time is right, genletmen..." Macrinus called for Linus, who escorted the men from the room. "Finally..." Julia exhaled, "A solid plan of action." Macrinus joined Julia in her relief. "Yes, My Lady," he sighed. "It won't be long now."
