Reug Reug vs Buchecha

There is nothing more beautiful than watching two guys who are grapplers having what can only be described as a panicked slugfest.

Senegalese mbapatte wrestler turned MMA fighter Oumar Kane (6-1) has slowly morphed from meme fighter to actual heavyweight MMA fighter. Doesn't mean he's particularly good, but he's good enough to win out in a fight with a skilled technical grappler in Buchecha because of his size, wrestling skills, and pure rock'em sock'em robot energy.

In a ONE division lacking any fighters, this win was good enough to get Reug Reug a title fight. He will be facing off with triple crown champion Anatoly Malykhin (14-0) for the ONE heavyweight title this Friday (Nov. 8). in the main event of ONE 169.

Marcus "Buchecha" Almeida vs Nicholas Meregali

Buchecha is one of the most decorated BJJ competitors in the history of the sport. He's easily on the short list for greatest jiu jitsu guys ever. And when he announced his move to MMA way back in like 2015, I was super excited to see what he could bring to MMA. Problem is, I think he waited too long. He only made his MMA debut in 2021, after signing with ONE championship. That's 6-7 years of experience he did not have but could have put him in position to be an active competitor at heavyweight. Even if shelf life at the bigger weights is longer, learning that late comes with a lot of risk. If you want to see what I mean, go watch Buchecha's fight with Reug Reug.

Anyway, Buchecha will be back in the 4oz gloves this Friday (Nov. 8) when he faces off with another powerful, giant wrestler Amir Aliakbari (14-3).

Reug Reug takes UD over Buchecha!

I don' t even know how to talk about this fight. Just a complete and utter comedy all the way through.

Turns out Reug Reug is incredibly difficult to take and hold down if you just shoot on him or try to tie up. Buchecha spent most of the first round finding that out as he tried repeatedly to get Reug Reug down only to be stuffed and hit in the head like 30+ times. To the point he was bleeding. And to be honest, Reug Reug's float over game is really nasty. When Almeida was trying to grab an arm and roll out of position or elevate, Kane was able to float to the stronger position or step over to stay on top. Both guys were exhausted after the first round but Buchecha especially so as he spent the entire thing basically trying to push over a mountain of muscle.

The 2nd round went slightly better for Buchecha as he realized that if he turned the corner on his shot, Reug Reug basically fell over. He did it like 3x. But by then, he was too tired to stay on top. He got to mount only for Kane to literally just stand up out of it. By the end of the round, Kane was landing big shots again as the tied up or from top position.

The third got wild as the two just exchanged big shots for like 30 seconds. Reug Reug planted his feet and threw and so did Buchecha and honestly, surprised neither guy went down. But also, Herb Dean gave Kane a yellow card because he kept fouling. Grabbing inside the gloves and Buchecha's shorts. Fantastic stuff. Then he tried to argue with Dean as Almeida was turtled up and Dean threatened to DQ him. What I'm saying is this was classic.

Honestly, if Buchecha was just a little more conformable standing in front of Reug Reug, he probably could have won. More long range kicks up the middle. More right hands. Less diving on every possible tie up. Would have saved him some of his gas tank.
