People can reliably rate other people.....but can they?
I recently updated the book summary that I wrote on Marcus Buckingham and Ashley Goodall’s book, “Nine Lies About Work: A Freethinking Leader’s Guide to the Real World”. One of the lies that stuck out to me was Lie #6, People can reliably rate other people. I’ve only had a handful of reviews in my life, all but one were highly ineffective and useless to me as an employee. Every work review in existence such as the 360-degree, performance evals, and the numerous others are based upon the concept that people can accurately rate how well someone else is doing at their job. And the truth is, that we can’t. “Over the last forty years, we have tested and retested people’s ability to rate others, and the inescapable conclusion—reported in research papers such as “The Control of Bias in Ratings: A Theory of Rating” and “Trait, Rater and Level Effects in 360-Degree Performance Ratings” and “Rater Source Effects Are Alive and Well After All”—is that human beings cannot reliably rate other human beings, on anything at all (source). The truth is that we can only reliably rate ourselves and how we rate others abilities is totally dependent on that. This quote of Wayne Dyer’s sums it up well to me, “When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself.”
The truth is, that we can only reliably rate our own experience-because that’s all that we have.
Abolishing all performance reviews doesn’t seem the way to go (although I am not opposed to it) but an understanding that as humans, though we share so many experiences we are also extremely unique and each has a different framework of how/why they are who they are and do what they do. Putting people into a specific mold to gauge your output as a company seems to hold too tightly to an industrial society from long ago.
Here is a good article about Lie #6, here is Marcus speaking about the Idiosyncratic Rater Effect and here is Marcus speaking about Lie #6.
What do you think about Lie #6? Is it something that you have encountered? Have you found a way around the lie? I am curious as to unique ways that people are “rating” their employees and employers.
Marcus Buckingham's StandOut Strengths Assessment
Marcus Buckingham's StandOut Strengths Assessment and our WorkStyles Assessment
Marcus Buckingham is offering his StandOut Assessment free right now and will be doing an Instagram session on the assessment at 12:00 pm PDT this Friday (April 24, 2020). I have enjoyed his assessments before and I really enjoyed this one that I took this morning. It might be interesting and useful for you.
A caveat – I do not think there is any way that an assessment can fully capture the…

I took a strength assessment (#MarcusBuckingham, Go put your strengths to work) last night and even though I'm not overly surprised by the results I was floored by what they told me. I feel like I am finally starting to find alignment in my life. I feel like I will finally be able to authentically find my purpose. These realizations and epiphanies I have been having over the last few days have been mind blowing and humbling. It's finally happening. I knew I would find my way. When the pull is strong enough, there is no denying it ❤ #theheartwantswhatitwants #bschool #strengthassessment #findingpurpose . . . . . #stimulator #advisor #strength #strengths #createalifearoundyourstrengths #love #purpose #goals #goaldigger #bossbabe #bossbabesunite #bosslife #slay #letsdothis #imready #nostoppingme #nostoppingmenow #hustle #humble #authentic #authenticallyonpurpose #purposedrivenlife #purposedrivenlife (at Holistic Healing with Sheena)
