The Pace Report: "Breaking Rhythm, One Stoke At A Time" The Vijay Iyer Interview
Welcome to another ediiton of The Pace Report featuring pianist and educator Vijay Iyer performing with his trio for his recent stint at the Jazz Standard in New York City. Vijay played music from his current trio "Break Stuff" on ECM Records featuring Marcus Gilmore on drums and Stephan Crump on bass. This past year Vijay was the Met Breuer's Artist in Residence(formally home of the Whitney Museum) as he performed and recorded a set of duets with trumpter Wadada Leo Smith that was inspired by the art work of Nasreen Mohamedi. The album "A Cosmic Rhythm With Each Stroke" was released on ECM Records earlier this winter to rave and critical reviews. I had a chance to speak with Vijay briefly to talk about the musical legacy of Wadada Leo Smith, his professorship at Harvard University in Boston, and his trio.
