Sumerian Mythology - The earliest deities of ancient Mesopotamia (26)
Creation Myth – Enuma Elish / Babylonian creation myth
The Sumerian work which showed the Sumerian idea of "Creation" and "Human Creation" was the "God Enki and Goddess Nimmah (Ref1)", but the other well-known "Creation Myth" of the ancient Mesopotamian civilisation is the Babylonian "Enuma Elish".
The story begins: "When above the Heaven had not yet been named, and below the Earth had not yet been named.”
This was followed by the proto-male god Apsu (the deification of fresh water) and the goddess Tiamat (the deification of sea water), from whom many gods were born in succession. The goddesses Apsu and Tiamat could not bear the noise of the young gods and began to plot their murder.
However, Apsu was murdered by the god Ea (Sumerian: Enki) instead. In a palace built on top of Apsu, the god Ea had a son, Marduk, with the goddess Damkina.
The god Marduk, seeking revenge, fights the goddess Tiamat and her army of "eleven composite beasts", defeats them and creates the heavens and the earth from Tiamat's corpse.
Marduk also took the "clay tablet of heavenly life" from the god Kingu of Tiamat's army, and came up with the idea of creating a human being from Kingu's blood to shoulder the labour of the gods.
Having thus established the order of the heavens and the earth, Marduk became king of the gods and received fifty titles from them, being hailed as "Bel of the nations" (Akkadian: meaning master) and "Supreme God of the gods".

創世神話〜エヌマ・エリシュ／バビロニアの創世神話
シュメールの「天地創造」「人間創造」についての考え方を示した作品は『エンキ神とニンマフ女神(参照1)』であったが、その他にも古代メソポタミア文明の「創世神話」としてよく知られているのが、バビロンの『エヌマ・エリッシュ』である。
物語は「上では天がまだ名づけられておらず、下では地が名づけられていなかったときに」とはじまる。
続いて原初の男神アプス（淡水の神格化）と女神ティアマト（海水の神格化）が現れ、両神から次々に多くの神が生まれた。アプス神とティアマト女神は若い神々の騒々しさに耐えられず、彼らの殺害を企てるようになる。
ところが、アプスは逆にエア神（シュメール語：エンキ）によって殺害され、アプスの上に建てた住居でエアはダウキナ女神との間にマルドゥク神をもうける。マルドゥク神は復讐を果たそうとするティアマト女神と彼女の創造した「11の合成獣」の軍団と戦って、彼らを破り、ティアマトの死体から天と地を創造する。また、マルドゥクはティアマト軍キングー神から「天命の粘土版」を奪い、キングーの血から神々の労役を肩代わりする人間をつくることを思いつく。
こうして天地の秩序を確立したマルドゥクは神々の王となって、神々から50の称号を受け、「諸国のベル(アッカド語:主人の意)「神々の最高神」と讃えられる。
