Jan. 18, 1970:
After a night out at the Metropolitan Theater in Morgantown, West Virginia University freshmen Mared Malarik and Karen Ferrell needed to find a ride home. Deciding to hitchhike back to their dorms, the girls allegedly got into a car with a middle-aged man, never to be seen again.
The investigation had been going on for a few months when the state police began receiving anonymous letters signed with a triangle that supposedly directed them to where the girls were. Upon following those instructions to Cheat Lake, which is just outside of the city, the girls were found on April 16, 1970, decapitated. The girls’ heads were never found.
Many suspects were on the police’s radar. Rumors that Maryland cults working under divine direction to kill the girls also spread throughout the state. But a man by the name of Eugene Paul came forward to confess to the crime and is now doing a life sentence, which officially closed the case, but it left many to wonder what could have been missed.
