This week I have some KICK ASS soul music for you, but first I wanted you to hear a bit of the Pee Wee Russell & Henry Red Allen record I reviewed on Instagram yesterday, because it really is phenomenal. Once that is done, though, Paul Butterfield will lead you into a few choice soul cuts, including 4 awesome covers that you probably never heard, but that you’ll thank me for. And if you had heard them, well you’ll thank me for reminding you anyway. I swear I think Margie Johnson’s version of “Let’s Stay Together” is better than the original. So powerful. Rory Gallagher might bring the mood back down a bit but I love this particular track off his excellent debut album, a rare tender moment by the guitar slinger. Rory’s lament is followed by Courtney Barnett’s ode to instant noodles, then the house music hit of 2015 - which was actually recorded by Fatima Yamaha all the way back in 2004, which is closer to when I first heard it - and finally, ending on a melancholic note, a beautiful performance on the berimbau by master Brazilian percussionist Naná Vasconcelos, who left us this past week. He was one of a kind, as you will hear...
