Maria Farantouri − Marina

Perhaps the strongest political, anti-dictatorship song of Mikis Theodorakis, with lyrics of Alekos Panagoulis, the greatest hero of the resistance against the military, right-wing, USA-backed dictatorship of 1967-1974 in Greece. Panagoulis tried to kill the dictator, failed, was arrested and tortured horrifically, without being broken. Elected member of Parliament with a centrist political party after the fall of the dictatorship, he was killed in 1976 in a suspect car accident. The lyrics are about the first dead of the resistance, who are guides of hope and fertilizer of freedom. The video shows images from the revolts against the dictatorship and more generally from the struggles of the Greek people in the last century for freedom (ελευθερία), democracy, and dignity. The voices are of Theodorakis himself and of Maria Farantouri.

Maria Farantouri performs here one of the most popular songs of Theodorakis (with lyrics by himself) about the torture under the right-wing military dictatorship of 1967-1974 and the strength of the tortured resistants and political prisoners. Theodorakis himself has been imprisoned and tortured by the dictators, although eventually the latter have released him because of the international pressure.
