Abrupt meetings

Guilherme paced the castle undercroft with a view to the gardens on his right. He doubted anyone would be nearby considering the recent events. Even he did not dare to walk alone though he knew there were better targets than a Duke of Portugal. Nevertheless, the guards that accompanied him followed from a decent distance, and so, Guilherme de Barcelos could pretend he was alone. A small insignificant figure under the grand and empty architecture of the castle.
He approached an arc and looked out upon the garden, leaning lightly in contemplation. That he had come to Switzerland after several losses, including his own, and that he should remain to watch those around him suffer much the same... such was the cruelty of life. But was it fair to call it cruelty? Was it not just life?
He saw her then, a young flower unblemished by the passing of time... yet. He was caught in the moment, the melancholic emotion of grief, and for the moment ignored etiquette, “young lady, it is not wise to walk alone, even if one wishes to be alone,” He pointed back at his own guards who stood within the undercroft while another emerged from across the garden clearly checking the safety of the surroundings.
