Just found about out the Twitter bullshit from your blog. I said this box shit was a dumbass idea from the start before any of them were compiled and sent out. Like? Don't send them mail?? First off those boxes looked crazy af showing up at the tiny multiplex where kyoani is located?? And on the 3rd floor no less?? Leave these poor nice people alone, jfc. Tbh kyoani got exactly the right idea about international fans, 85% are batshit from what I can tell

I will never say the box of the MH fandom or the campaign by the RH fandom was a bad idea!!! Everyone worked hard, everyone just wanted to show how we all appreciate the show and its characters. I am still really happy for this, I love seeing being passionate other something. We just couldn’t expect that stupid and rude people would take away all the positive side of it.

ugh your doujin scans are blessed and so important you are doing gods work. How did you learn kanji? i can't learn them well bc i don't read and I don't read so I can't learn them.. do you have any tips? peace and <3

i’m going to get into my japanese learning journey/process so i have a feeling it’s going to get a bit lengthy

i used to take chinese (didn’t retain much though lol), and while it’s obviously not necessary, it can definitely help with some basic kanji skills (stroke order, radicals, meanings). sometimes if you know the chinese you can predict the japanese pronunciation of the kanji - i’ve been lucky a couple of times.

before taking japanese in college, i taught myself the basics (hiragana, katakana, simple kanji) when i was younger (around 14 years old). while it wasn’t much it gave me a pretty good foundation. i would print out song lyrics and then write the pronunciation above each line.

then i took japanese in college and studied abroad in tokyo for a semester which is why i’m able to do what i do today. i’m assuming you know the basics (basic grammar, hiragana, katakana) since you’re just asking about kanji. it’s mostly drilling, especially in the beginning - writing the characters over and over and over on a grid sheet. as for how to read them, a lot of it is memorization and for that i like using flashcards. memrise is a great site for flash memorization; i liked using the mobile app quizlet to create my own flash cards on my phone. (saves paper!)

i think the most important thing is to never skip over a kanji you don’t know. always go through the effort of looking it up if you don’t know what it means - it’ll help you remember it better. i use a japanese dictionary app called imiwa and the chinese handwriting keyboard so that i can write kanji that i don’t know how to pronounce. when i was in japan i was constantly looking up kanji when i was out and about - on signs, products, advertisements, etc.

i also recommend rikaikun (or rikaichan if you’re on a mac) which is a little handy pop up dictionary add-on for web browsers. you can turn it on when you’re on a website with japanese text, you can simply hover over it and it’ll define it for you.

sorry this was kind of long-winded and i don’t really know how to give advice LOL. i was fortunate enough to take japanese courses/study abroad but i know not everyone has the same opportunities and i really wish i knew better tips for those of you who are looking to self study.

You can buy the mooks in person at the KyoAni shop in Uji, but it's not somewhere that's really close to any tourist destination or even easy to get to for someone who doesn't know how to use the trains. Online is the best bet~~
