Spoon 2Di Vol. 57 interview snippet, Utsumi Hiroko on Haru and Makoto’s ‘fight’

–Before going to Australia, having his first fight with Makoto had seemed to be a huge blow to Haruka.

“Makoto rarely expresses emotions of ‘anger’. However, when he does, it has to be for someone else. Up till now Makoto has always prioritised Haruka’s feelings. Even if he feels a particular way, if Haruka is unwilling, he will tend to avoid it. The scenes with him following Haruka with his gaze are also portrayed with such an implication. But just this time, when he realised that even he did not know what Haruka thought, and after hearing Nagisa and Rei’s feelings towards Haruka, he felt that he had to relay his own feelings to Haruka, and so he finally let out his thoughts. But the Haruka at that time couldn’t accept Makoto’s words. He had always believed that Makoto was the one person who would stand by him, so he probably felt betrayed.”

– Which was the scene that left the deepest impression on you?

“I’ve mentioned it earlier, it’s Haruka and Makoto’s fight. I’ve always wanted to draw how Makoto would look when he’s truly angry, so with this scene it felt like ‘I finally have the chance!’ Even though the Makoto in that scene was angry, his expression was that of between anger and on the verge of crying. Having to express that frustration towards Haruka had pained him, and Haruka not seeming to understand had saddened him. If you think about it, this manner of getting angry was just like Makoto. On the side of the Free! series’ music composer, Kato Tatsuya, we explained in detail the impression of the scene, and he placed extra attention to compose the music based on it, it was really touching. The intense setting and melancholic melody integrated very well, and it produced a really imposing scene. From the start of the first season we have made it a point to focus on depicting the image of Makoto reaching out his hand to Haruka. Only in this scene, Makoto was shown to let go. This was part of his growth, and both of their growth. After all, as part of growing up, they can’t be together all the time. The act of Makoto letting go was a big step for him. But it’s definitely not anything to be sad about, and rather, it’s a positive implication of their growth. After all, in the final episode, he reached out his hand to Haruka again, right?”
