Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games Is Canon
So you may be wondering is Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games canon? And if so how does it work, both of Sonic's and Mario's World aren't compatible with each other. Well........
So in Sonic X Shadow Takeover - All Answers (+ Bonus!) at 2:13 Sonic references the Shadow having danced at the Olympic games. Now this is noteworthy because the voice actors are guided on how they should act in character and stuff they can and cannot say. With a lot of what they say reflecting how things the characters have done before and things they like. For example Shadow liking coffee.
But there is more than just that, in a previous post I pointed out that Sticks was referenced on page 271 of the Sonic The Hedgehog Encyclo-Speed-Ia it was stated Sticks' debut outside of Sonic Boom was Mario & Sonic At The Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Which make sense to say because Sonic Boom isn't canon. But also, the Everything Is Canon line is used which we see used elsewhere in the book whenever canonicity is being talked about. For example Knuckles Chaotix. Also, I believe most of the mangas are supposed to be canon as well.
But most importantly is in Sonic Frontiers 123 Rapid-Fire Questions With Takashi Iizuka at 0:04 we get some comments from Iizuka about the Olympic games. When answering questions about things like Sonic meeting Mario for the first time and the first meeting, it is never treated as if the games aren't canon. All that to say the Olympic games are canon, but now for the finer details.
So you may be wondering how are the 2 interacting. Well in the Mario games it has been established Mario visits a place fans have dubbed Tour Earth and often hops around other dimensions. We see characters like Wario uses dimensional travel to invade of places as well. This is also the case for Sonic as seen many times in several pieces of media, like in the Sonic & DC Crossover Comic and the Angry Birds and Sonic Crossover. This is also how games like Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and Sonic Crossworlds are even possible. Note the Spongebob in Crossworlds is likely no the Spongebob because of the size. Dimensional travel is actually the explanation for the Olympic games are possible. As stated in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the contenders are "from the world of Mario & Sonic."
Now some people wonder how can Sonic still be a teen and Mario not be super old if the Olympic Games is canon? Well my best assumption is time in Sonic and Mario's worlds just run much slower compared to the Earth that they visit. The is sorta precedent for this given Tour Earth seems to go through time pretty fast.
Now if you are wondering about the oddness in heights for Sonic and Mario; well as I discussed in a previous post, Sonic and friends likely ate Super Mushrooms.
Now how about Mario? Is it the Mario? More than likely. So as you should know, in the games it's intended to always be the same Mario with few exceptions. One being Smash Bros. because everyone is toys in the real world in that. Some games that had no direct involvement in even the slightest such as Mario Is Missing and Mario's Time Machine. And the Mario + Rabbids games which is a separate continuity made after this claim of always being the same Mario in the games.
Well how about the way the characters are depicted? Are depicted in ways that don't match up with their game depictions? Well not to my knowledge, in fact the characters are depicted exactly like they are in their games. Wario and Waluigi are not related, Shadow is stated to be immortal, and Sonic needs a life preserver because he can't swim.
Well why doesn't Sonic just win all the competitions with ease? Well this is simple, first off Mario while not able to run at supersonic speeds is pretty athletic. Mario has been on many adventures and partaken in many sports himself, don't let his appearance fool you he is no pushover. As for Sonic, well we just need to look to why Sonic uses cars to race. Sonic likes the competition and also like to make things a fair race. So in the Olympic games Sonic, and let's be honest most of Sonic's friends; all likely slow down in the racing events to give everyone a fair chance.
Also, if you are wondering about Bowser see the following post.
Now one final thing to note is in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Banjo and Kazooie crossover and race with Sonic. This is noteworthy because Banjo shares a world with Mario as established in Diddy Kong Racing.
And that's how the Olympic games are possible for both characters. Written by Eris.
Is Splatoon Canon To MK8?
So something some people have wondered is if Splatoon is canon to the Mario world, since Inklings show up in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
The answer is no. So first off the Inklings cannot share a world with Mario, as both the Mushroom World and Splatoon World are vastly different. One might question, well what about a dimensional travel crossover like with Sonic and Bomberman? This is also unlikely for one primary reason.....
As we know Inklings die in water, and if they go into the water they almost immediately dissolve and respawn. The Inklings in MK8 can go into water, and will not dissolve. So unless the Inklings have a special way to prevent themselves from dying in water for a karting event, these Inklings cannot be the ones from Splatoon. So what is likely going is these Inklings are likely from another continuity in which Inklings can survive in water. Written by Eris the Lorekeeper
question what are canonicity standings of all the English translations of all the Mario/Donkey Kong/Wario/Yoshi games? (Websites, Manuals, In game text) I mean regardless of accuracy they are still official Nintendo products at the end of the day I mean they are what most Mario fans outside of Japan grew up on
There are, in my opinion, two perspectives to consider.
1. Canonicity of language is based on an individual, game-by-game basis. The only canon version of a game’s text is the language it was originally written in. ie. Japanese for Super Mario RPG, English for Donkey Kong Country.
2. The Japanese versions of games are the only canon versions, as Nintendo, a Japanese company, develops or collaborates on every canon game and the vast majority of canon games are made by Japanese developers. ie. Japanese for Super Mario RPG, Japanese for Donkey Kong Country.
In the past I believed the former. However, I have noticed recently that mistakes and continuity errors made in the English versions of games made outside Japan are nowhere to be found in the Japanese text, and even if a game was made by an English-speaking studio oftentimes the writers are Japanese, for example Luigi’s Mansion 3.
But either way, Japanese is usually the canon text. Frankly what Mario fans grew up on isn’t all too relevant when plenty of us grew up on the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, which of course certainly isn’t canon in any capacity. I will say though that this doesn’t mean someone should go out of their way to learn Japanese and only play the Japanese versions of games. 90% of the time the localisations are accurate, witty and of course easier for a non-Japanese-speaker to understand. If you find something fishy in the localised text, there’s no harm in then checking the line’s Japanese equivalent.
Thanks for your question!
I feel like it is important that I let everyone know that Mario and Luigi do have parents and it has been seen in canon that their father is a massive giant who can fit both of his adult sons in the palm of his hand.
Anyways Mario is Trans that’s a Fact

Turtles Have Hair In The Mario World
So something people don't realize is turtles are capable of growing hair. Now while one might think it's just what I've dubbed the Boss Shell Creepers that have hair, it's not just them. Bowser and Bowser Junior obviously have hair, and so too do the Koopalings not all of them do. Roy and Wendy like many turtles don't have hair. But what about the other species of turtles like Koopas? That is the claim that turtles as a whole can grow hair.
Well in Super Mario Odyssey when you knock off a Hammer or Fire Brother's headgear you get to see that they have hair.
The Common Koopa also can grow hair as seen in Koopley and Kuzzle. Also, the reason I call them the Common Koopa is because of the following. Koopa Troopas are members of Bowser's army, and not all Koopas of this species let alone in general work for Bowser. Meanwhile simply calling them Koopas can make things confusing when talks about different Koopa species. With all that and the fact this species of Koopas is so common I've dubbed them the Common Koopa.
Anyways back on track. Lakitus are another species of turtles that have hair, and it's pretty common. In fact other members of the species like Lakilester have more obvious hair. I'd also note Morton's hair is like that of a Lakitu.
Now finally to mention the OVA, while non canon it this has many useful parallels to the games. For example, several Koopa Troopas in this animation can be seen having hair. This could indicate from the start all Koopas from the start have had the ability to grow hair.
