Happy birthday to the magnificent Miss Marion Boyce whose costume design gave Phryne the visual appeal that was far more exceptional than a reader like me could have ever pictured in my head.

One of the most iconic garments featured on the show was Phryne’s cockfighting robe. This quote by Miss Marion from the Costume Exhibition S3 catalog illustrated her love for the Asian fabrics and embroideries, which translated into the stunningly beautiful piece.

Happy birthday, Miss Marion! Thank you for being our very special guest at the Miss Fisher Con 2023 in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. Your geniuses, graciousness, and generosity are eternally appreciated by the fandom.

The quote of Marion is from the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries Costume Exhibition, Series 3, catalogue. She is known to have used materials from her personal collection on the show, from rare fabrics to vintage coats or jewelry. During the interview for the exhibition, she said that “once I actually use something, even if it’s actually my own (as in something I wear – either clothing or jewelry), I can never, ever wear it again once it goes on an actor as if then it belongs to them and it’s no longer mine. So I have to really like the person or the show to actually be able to hand it over.” We are really lucky that she has such a great love for Phryne and adores Essie that she shares her precious pieces with the show and the world.

So looking forward to seeing the amazing Miss Marion Boyce again at the Miss Fisher Con in St. Paul, Minnesota, next week (July 27 – 29, 2023). The Miss Fisher Con site states “Her genius at historical style and attention to detail were instrumental in igniting the fans’ passionate love of the show”, and I agree wholeheartedly.

I would also like to add that she is personable, gracious, generous, and fun in person. A few of us had the honor and pleasure having tea with her in her studio in Melbourne, Australia, back in 2020. It was an afternoon that I will never forget. She shared many behind the scenes stories, patiently answered our questions, and let us photograph and even touch some of the pieces from the show. I am a fan for life!

Celebrating Miss Marion Boyce’s birthday (September 18) with one of her quotes about the design concept of our favorite lady detective’s costumes, “Phryne used to burst onto scene—she was in perpetual motion, so I decided to use cloth as a bit a metaphor. I had large scarves and large swaths of cloth to help create that motion”. Thank you, Miss Marion, for the visually stunning, practically functioning, and character complimenting wardrobe that is both fashionable and timeless.

p.s. I started to covet Phryne’s pilot scarf the minute I saw it in S1E3 The Green Mill Murder, and I now have my eye on the one Marion was wearing in this photo too.

Mark your calendars and set reminders, Miss Marion Boyce fans (@marion_boyce on Instagram). On Thursday, August 5, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time, Sherri Rabinowitz (@sherri.rabinowitz on Instagram) is interviewing her on “Chatting with Sherri” on Blog Talk Radio.

We all love the work Marion did for Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, but you are seriously missing out if you have not seen “The Dressmaker” (2015 film) in which she and Margot Wilson designed breathtakingly beautiful costumes that was integral in telling the story. The movie is available in the U.S. for streaming on Amazon Prime and via Netflix DVD services.
