Miles to go before quantum physics and microscopy
In an interesting profile on Marissa Mayer in the Guardian, the Yahoo executive was quoted as saying search is "physics in the 1600s or biology in the 1800s. There’s miles to go before you get to quantum physics or even a microscope."
Cool quote, except the microscope was invented well before the 1800s.
Professional photographers
Marissa Mayer: “There’s no such thing as Flickr Pro today because [with so many people taking photographs] there’s really no such thing as professional photographers anymore.”
The pop you heard was the bursting of some of the balloons floated with the launch of the Flickr upgrade.
As usual, Ms. Mayer was being logical. But, ironically, logic is not always binary. Furthermore, cold logic does not warm hearts. More than a few diehard Flickr members heard Mayer's declaration too loudly and too clearly.
Open Letter to Marissa Mayer and Yahoo!
I don't mind that you've bought Tumblr. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you'll be true to your word and leave it be the way it has been and only change things that actually need improvement.
That said, on both http://marissamayr.tumblr.com and yahoo.tumblr.com you have a post using a flashing GIF. I clicked the link from Twitter and my photosensitivity was immediately triggered upon the page's loading. I understand the Internet is use-at-my-own-risk when clicking links, and I understand that you're trying to delve into the GIF-based culture of Tumblr in a show of solidarity. Still, in the future, please either use more static images, images with a lower framerate, or tag it with a warning?
