Friday Friday!!

Good morning Fellow Islanders! 

It's a very pleasant 58 degrees on the back porch this morning.  The waning moon continues to cast its brilliant moonlight on our quiet pre-dawn island paradise.  The winds are calm, and the forest critters are active - scurrying about the forest.   Those arriving for Christmas this weekend will see spectacular weather over the next few days.  We'll warm to the upper 60's today & tomorrow, and maybe the 70's by Sunday.  High tide peaks around 9:15 this morning, while low tide at about 3:15 this afternoon. 

For breakfast this morning, Chef Chip is featuring our classic French toast with fresh strawberries and whipped cream for only $5.95.  For lunch today, Chip is making a delicious beer battered fish and chips with coleslaw and malt vinegar for only $8.95.

Next week, the Village Chapel will be holding two Christmas Eve services - one at  5pm another at 7pm, with the earlier service featuring a children's sermon.  On Christmas Day, the Village Chapel will now host a Catholic Mass at evening at 9pm.   All are invited to attend any of these services.

As a reminder, the Market will close at NOON on Christmas Eve, and we'll be completely closed on Christmas Day.   We will set out the daily newspapers, along with some coffee and hot cider for everyone on Christmas morning - as is our family tradition.

It's not too late to shop for those last minute gifts!  Most of our retailers are open and many have end of year sales going on.  I received a note from Joyce Nelson, and she told me that All About Art's end of year sale features 20% off everything - even the newest stuff.  She also shared that Chappy will be teaching classes over the holidays - including the popular "Wine-ing About Art," along with semi-private painting and drawing classes for adults or children.  Call to schedule - 910-368-5336.  They're open today through the 23rd from 11 to 4, and on Christmas Eve from 10 to 1.  They'll be closed on the 25th and 26th.

If you're heading down for New Years', you'll find the island teeming with activities!  Shoals Club is featuring a "Before New Year's Eve Blowout" on Saturday, December 28 featuring everyone's favorite - the Craig Woolard Band.  Enjoy heavy hors d'oeurves, beer & wine specials and the price is only $25 for full members and $35 for temporary members and guests.  Call  [phone] for reservations.  Parents may want to reserve a spot in the Shoals Club Kids PJ Party going on at the same time for ages 5-12.

We're about a third booked already for Chef Chip's famous New Years' weekend Oyster Roast!  The fun will start early at 4:30pm on Sunday evening, December 29 on our side porch with steamed oysters, potatoes, corn on the cob, cole slaw, and all of the usual trimmings.  We had so much fun at the last one, and put a serious hurting on a keg of beer :)  Oysters are in full season now, but for those non-oyster types, we'll also have some other homemade specialties as well, along with beer & wine & Chip's famous banana pudding!  $28.95 for adults, $14.95 for kids under 11.  We have limited seating, and the event will sell out, so be sure and get your reservations in early by clicking this link:  www.maritimemarketbhi.com/oyster-roast.aspx.

December 17th 'Round The Island

Good morning Fellow Islanders!

 It's 53 degrees on the back porch this morning, and there's a light breeze stirring in the forest as the faint light of dawn burns through the darkness.  We're in for a glorious winter day on the island!  Look for abundant sunshine with mild breezes and a high in the low 60's.  Put the skiff in the water, or tee it up for a perfect winter round of golf, or take a long stroll on a desolate beach.   All are within reach, so seize the day!   High tide peaks this morning at about 7:15, while low tide occurs around 1:30 this afternoon.

 For breakfast this morning, Chef Chip is featuring a Southwestern loaded breakfast burrito with home fries for only $5.95.  For lunch today, Chip is serving a blackened chicken club sandwich with bacon, lettuce,tomato, and Swiss on toasted wheat for only $9.95.

 Our last Howl event of 2013 happens tonight, and it's the perfect ending to our glorious winter day!  We'll gather as usual at Beach Access 39 from 4-6pm, and we'll have a bonfire to scare away any lingering winter chill.  Somewhere near the sunset, the beaufiful sounds of the Celtic bag pipe will approach our gathering and serenade us with the magic of olde Scotland.  Chef Chip is bringing a huge pot of soup and some chef appetizers.   BYOB and bring along any wondering Scots, Irish or others of the Queen's persuasion.

Thursday Specials at the Maritime Market - 12/12

Good Morning Fellow Islanders!  Its' 40 degrees on the back porch this morning, with just a slight breeze rustling in the pre-dawn darkness. As the sun rises, the breeze will pick up a little as we warm up to about 50 under a sunny, cloudless winter sky. We'll drop back to the low 30's tonight, and warm to the mid-50's tomorrow, while Saturday & Sunday look to be in the low 60's. Low tide happens around 9:30 this morning, while high tide peaks at about 3:45 this afternoon.

For breakfast this morning, Chef Chip is preparing a western omelet loaded with sautéed peppers, onions, cheddar and ham with a side of crisp home fries for only $5.95. For lunch today, come enjoy a savory, fresh ground angus burger, chargrilled and topped with applewood smoked bacon and melted blue-marble jack cheese for only $8.95.

The Chamber will hold its monthly board meeting this morning at 11am at the BHA. We've postponed our Social this month and will hold our Chamber Social in conjunction with our First Annual Meeting - taking place on Thursday, January 9. The Village Chapel's Children's Choir will perform a Christmas Holiday Concert on Sunday, December 15th at 4pm. Carol Sauder will direct the children's choir, "His Kids," as they raise their voices in celebration of the birth of Jesus.

The BHI Club is facilitating the delivery of Christmas trees, and all you need to do is stop by Stewart's Hardware in Southport and select your tree, or you can call Stewart's directly at 910-457-5544. The Club will make the last pick-up of tagged trees and deliver to the Clubhouse tomorrow.

Monday Morning, 12/9/13

Good morning Fellow Islanders!

 It's 49 degrees on the back porch this morning, and the air remains heavy with the moisture of the last 24 hours.  There's a light breeze stirring in the trees, as the early morning twilight struggles to break through the cloud cover.   Today we may see some more drizzle or a rain shower as we warm to the low 60's with moderate southwesterly breezes.  We'll maintain 60 degree temperatures through the evening, as the chance of rain persists through tomorrow.  Low tides will occur at 6:30 this morning, and again around 7 tonight, while high tide peaks at about 1 this afternoon.

 For breakfast this morning, Chef Chip is making a delicious three egg omelet filled with smoked bacon, mushrooms and Boursin cheese for only $5.95.  For lunch today, enjoy a grilled chicken Cobb wrap loaded with avocado, bacon, Danish bleu cheese, tomato, and crisp romaine for just $8.95.

 The next Howl at the Moon Sunset/Moonrise Party will happen on Tuesday, December 17, and we have a special musical treat for everyone - inspired by our recent stay at the Inn at Spanish Bay :)  At sunset, enjoy the Celtic sound of the bag pipe as the piper makes his way down the beach and to the bonfire.  It's the last Howl of 2013, and we'll gather as usual at Access 39 from 4-6pm and enjoy the warmth of the fire and the fellowship of dear friends.   Chef Chip will be making a huge pot of soup, along with some chef appetizers.  BYOB and bring an appetizer to share.  The sun sets early - at 5:05pm, and the full golden moon will rise from the depths of the Atlantic at 5:40pm.

 This year the Chapel did not receive the names for the Angel Tree in time to allow for shopping, but If you would still like to help an underprivileged child in Brunswick County this Christmas please write a check to: Brunswick Family Assistance and give it to Pattie at the Chapel by 12:00 noon Wed Dec 11.  Please note  "Angel Tree" on the memo line of your check.

Thanksgiving 'Round The Island

Good morning Fellow Islanders!

  It's a chilly 28 degrees on the back porch this morning, with a brisk & bitter wind stirring in the treetops, and a hint of dawn struggling to reach the forest floor.  Today we'll be lucky to reach 48 degrees, but the sun will be shining brightly, the winds will be light, and the warmth of our family & friends will melt away any lingering autumn chills.  It's Thanksgiving! - my favorite island holiday, and the island is once again alive and vibrant with carts, kids, friends and yes - even surfers (with wetsuits).   Look for sunny skies all weekend with temperatures gradually warming to near 60.  Low tide occurs just after 9 this morning, while high tide will peak at about 3:15 this afternoon.

  For breakfast this morning, Chef Chip is featuring our massive breakfast burrito - loaded with scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, roasted potatoes, salsa, sour cream, and your choice of either bacon, sausage or country ham.  It's on our breakfast menu for $6.95, but you can enjoy this treat today for only $5.95. 

 We'll be open tomorrow & Saturday until 8pm, and we'll return to our winter hours on Sunday, closing at 2pm.

One of our favorite wines is on sale this weekend - the delicious Kim Crawford New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.  We sell tons of this wine for $23.99, but we have a special price this weekend only at $17.99. 

  The next New Moon Beach Party and Beer Swap happens on Friday after Thanksgiving, 11/29.  Meet at beach access #13, across from the Villas at 4pm.  Bring your favorite beer to add it to the communal beer cooler while selecting some else's favorite for comparison.  Hot Dogs will be on the grill, and donations will be gratefully accepted, with proceeds benefiting the Conservancy's new deer management program.

  The Bald Head Island Conservancy's First Annual 2013 Fall Festival happens from Noon-4pm on Saturday, Nov. 30, and the campus will be filled with family friendly nature-themed games and activities, new  environmental education programs, a scavenger hunt, hands-on discovery  stations, arts and crafts, live animal encounters, and more.  A Festival Pass is only$15 per adult, or $10 per child (free for those under 3) and pass holders can come & go throughout the day with their passes.

  The last Turtle Trot of the year also happens on Saturday after Thanksgiving.  Registration begins at 8:30am and the run/walk begins at 9:30am. The  3.1 (5k) race begins and ends at the Conservancy.  All registrations include a t-shirt, and proceeds from the event support the Conservancy's Sea Turtle Protection Program.

  The Smith Island Art League's Annual Thanksgiving Day Weekend Show will be held on Friday & Saturday after Thanksgiving from 10am to 5pm at the Bald Head Association on Lighthouse Wynd.  Art League members work in a variety of mediums including oil, acrylics, watercolor, pastels, pen and ink, photography, clay, textiles, dyes, yarns, metal and beads.

  Also, the BHI Artisans Show and Sale will take place on Saturday, Nov. 30th from 10am-5pm at the BHI Club.  Numerous unique handcrafted items created by island artisans will be on display, from beautiful handcrafted jewelry  to fabric art such as home décor, wall hangings, aprons, scarves, purses, quilts, handbags and tote bags, along with homemade cookies and candies.

  Mojo’s is planning the best New Year's party ever to close out 2013 and kick off a terrific 2014!  They have hired Bulldog Beat -  a six-piece band with three singers. The band rocked Mojo’s 4 weeks ago on a Saturday night and then sang at chapel the next morning.  Dancing will start around 8:30 and continue until 2AM.  The $35 cover charge includes heavy hors d’oeuvres,  the terrific music, and a champagne toast at Midnight.  The menu for the night is on our Facebook page.  Dress is casual or not, up to you.  Please call and make your reservation early 910-231-7345.
