4 Hard Truths for Entrepreneurs to Face
Everyone knows that being an entrepreneur is hard. Between working on a shoestring budget to asking potential investors for money, the life of an entrepreneur is stressful and, unless you make it big, thankless and not quite as lucrative as people would believe. Being an entrepreneur is very different from what people think; there are a number of truths that need to faced down if you want to succeed. If you can deal with these, you stand a chance of being as successful as you’ve always dreamt.
Check Your Ego: It’s not about you. Your ego can help push you towards new heights just as easily as it can make you stubborn and unwilling to change or accept defeat. You need to realize that letting go of certain people and making certain decisions might harm your ego, but they will help your business.
Your Idea Might be Unoriginal and Just Plain Bad: There are a lot of smart people with a lot of great ideas. There’s a very real chance that your idea isn’t just worse, but that it’s also been thought of before. Don’t let your ego (see above) prevent you from thinking on your feet and adapting. Take the good parts of your idea and turn it into something better!
Everyone is Your Boss: Just because you’re an entrepreneur and have your own company doesn’t mean you’re the top of the food chain. There are so many people you need to answer to when you’re an entrepreneur: stockholders, investors, your board, your clients, your employees (you need them, don’t ignore their demands and desires), and so many others. Thinking that being an entrepreneur would mean being your own boss is a silly way to go about things.
You Might Not Have the Time: There’s a very real chance that you won’t be able to meet your full goals all at once. Visionary ideas are great to work towards but can be quickly derailed by the fact that life is chaotic and plans don’t always work. Be prepared to put off the more difficult parts of your plan until you’re in the proper place to accomplish them.
If you can come to terms with these truths then you’ve already overcome some of the hardest parts of being an entrepreneur. Coming to terms with how difficult the journey will be is the first step towards making it; good luck!
