Mark Morton - Hell & Back
Thursday, July 10: Mark Morton, "The Never"
Even though he plays in a very successful band, Mark Morton flies under the radar: the Lamb of God guitarist has always been more softspoken than Randy Blythe, but in addition to being a crucial creative force he also wrote no small portion of their lyrics. That made his solo album more intriguing as an idea even if he farmed out the vocals, though “The Never” didn’t sound far removed from the more midtempo tracks Chuck Billy sometimes makes with Testament. That said, the tune was a fierce rocker that sounded a little warmer than the overly clinical production LoG is known for, and Chuck was in his pocket. It was a low stakes track, likely by design, but it showed Morton’s versatility and felt natural as a busman’s holiday from his day job.
