Manchester United women win the Adobe FA Cup for the first time in their history, beating Tottenham ladies 4-0 with goals from Ella Toone, Rachel Williams and 2 from Lucia Garcia. Proudest day of my life.
Mark Skinner is United's new manager
Speaking of the new Offside Rule WSL: it's just out now! :D excited to give it a listen, and as usual to read your thoughts on it later if anything stood out to you :)
Just listened to it - The Offside Rule: WSL Edition is hands down my favourite podcast, it’s just so entertaining as well as informative and always has great guests.
Obviously loved the massive praise of Viv and the compilation of Robyn going ‘Miedema! Miedemaaaa! Miedema again! And it’s Miedemaaa!’ etc in the commentary was hilarious 😂
Interesting discussion about Liverpool, I definitely agree with a lot of what they say - I like that they’re calling the club out for basically just doing stuff for social media (the pre-season trip and joint squad photo) rather than actually supporting the women’s team.
Also really interesting to hear Bass talk about the difference between the way Bristol were so passive whereas West Ham were (possibly over) feisty and got their goals in the end but ended up with a red card. I think frankly that Bristol were just overwhelmed by Arsenal so early on that the wind was just taken out of their wings immediately whereas West Ham fought back immediately after United’s first goal.
Good to hear from Mark Skinner (love that Bass brought him along) - wonder if he feels a bit guilty for leaving Birmingham in the lurch, but really interesting to hear some insight how the team works and behind the scenes etc. Hadn’t realised that literally all of the Orlando Pride staff were new this year, v interesting to hear about how they weren’t totally prepared but now know more about the league and have more time to make more signings. I’m looking forward to seeing who they sign and how they progress. Not a big fan of him saying that the characters in the NWSL/the women are more impressive/stronger etc than those in the FAWSL. I get that he went from Birmingham with only a few ‘stars’ to the Pride with people like Marta but it didn’t really come across very well…
Really enjoyed hearing from Willie Kirk - very impressed with what he’s done with Everton and looking forward to seeing how they continue throughout the season. Very much looking forward to Everton moving to Walton Park (supposed to be at end of February) - hope that them moving closer to the men’s stadium will bring more fans.
Excited for the Offside Rule/Guardian’s Top 100 Female Players list to come out this week - the lists are going out in sections Tues-Fri online and then in the newspaper itself Wed-Sat.
Also Robyn saying that she just loves Viv so much made my day! I was like “Yes Robyn! Me too!”
