As part of Mark Spelman’s ‘The Weight’s Progress’ we have some ‘merch’ for sale! Here’s some blurb about it from Mark . . . ‘I didn’t study art so my education came through the library and occasional trips into town to a museum if I was lucky. Postcards were an important way for me to have access to art; a sense of ownership that allowed me to spend as long as I wanted with various pieces that moved me. These days even the cost of a postcard can be prohibitively expensive so it’s important to me to have a pay what you want approach to the prints on display. The beauty of these works is that they reproduce precisely, if not better, on a photocopier. The copy is in no way inferior to the original. Hogarth’s work with the Engravers Act meant he retained ownership over his labour and his work, but the re-production of his, and others, etchings undoubtedly had a profound effect on the cultural consciousness at the time. A part of me romanticises the development of the printing press as an egalitarian revolution that have economically ordinary or disadvantaged people access to potentially life changing work. I’m pretty sure the prints weren’t cheap, but the potential was there. And by using a bog standard photocopier to allow people the opportunity to take home an exact reproduction of a work on display for the cost they ascribe to it, also plays havoc with the notion of value and who it is that determines it.’ For more info DM us @project78gallery or come and see the show.
