When I first moved to New York City, I briefly worked at Yossi Milo Gallery where I had the privilege of seeing Markus Brunetti's FACADES exhibition in 2015.
For ten years, Brunetti traveled through Western Europe in a truck with his partner, Betty Schoener, photographing the facades of churches, cathedrals and cloisters in minute detail.
He spent weeks or sometimes years shooting each facade from top to bottom, documenting every single detail from street level. Then he digitally assembled the thousands of resulting images (a process that often took longer than the photography itself). The final body of work is an incredible collection of hyper-realistic compositions, almost as magical to behold as the buildings themselves.
Today I am so glad that this piece, a preservation of time and place, exists.
