my 23andme results showed some ancestry coming from Tyne and Wear in Northumberland, so this fits.
Past Cherokee rolls were dismissed (like the Dawes roll) because of non-natives invading the Cherokee nation and pretending to be Indian; this is a possibility for one if not all ancestors. However, settlers intermingled with the Cherokee as early as the 1770s, so if there is a distant ancestor, that is where it likely came from.
John W. Marler -- Cherokee by blood, but denied because didn’t marry before Nov 1 1875. Not to be confused with John Marler, who was Choctaw.
