Nothing Is Easy (Marnie Stern):
"There are no coincidences No one has ever been caught Into the impossible Hey, you won't need a sledgehammer To walk in my shoes But nothing is easy"
Song: Year of the Glad
Artist: Marnie Stern
Album: The Chronicles of Marnia
I’ve been hearing the name Marnie Stern a lot recently, but never gave her a listen. That happens with a lot with bands whose names that don’t particularly strike out at me. In this case, Marnie reminds me of a fun quirky girl (yay) but Stern conjures up horrid images of NYU’s School of Business (nay). This morning, I decided to give in and see what the buzz is about. This was the first song that appeared on her Spotify page. Immediately, I liked the noisy guitar riffs, and then her voice dropped in like a cherry sugar bomb, if that’s a thing. Sweet and slightly off, it’s an interesting voice and along the lines of Grimes, if she was a rocker chick. There's a part of the chorus that rings like the "Eee! Eee! Eee! Eee!" a la the film Psycho. I like this new find.
Best lines:
On a mission
The beginning
New finds
New finds and old dreams
And everything’s starting now.
Marnie Stern at Baby's All Right
What I saw on tuesday night was more than I could have ever expected from a free concert. I just expected some short sets from some bands that I have never about. Then another short set from the headliner, Marnie Stern. Some of those expectations were fulfilled throughout the night. The first band, whose name I completely forgot on a reason, sounded to me like a band that I would let play on Spotify as I was doing work, but would not really pay attention to the music at all. Most of my time was taken up by seeing who had the better jokes about the State of the Union happening that night. Torres was slightly better, the lead guitarist and vocalist did take me away from time to time, but then again I was still hunkering down on that twitter, trying to find out how to break out on the twitter sphere. What would I have to do so that people would follow me?
Then came what I was waiting all day and night for, the shredding and tappa tappa styles of Marnie Stern. She walked out acting like the boss that she was, talking to the crowd and cutting quick jokes to the band. It was all in joy and fun, but soon enough the crowd realized what was going on with Stern this one particular evening. She was not on beat the entire time, making very simple mistakes to her songs. After she started just fucking around with the feedback coming from her amp, we all knew that Marnie was drunk off her ass. She kept swaying back in forth, and messing up with her loaded riffs on her pedal, selecting the wrong preset over and over again. People would leave in droves, as they could not stand the sounds of the squeals coming from her amp. She could have played only four songs, and half the crowd had already left pissed off about her inebriation. The last song was the saddest sight to see as she had to restart it, then continue off beat for most o the song. The song didn't even reach the half way point where she decided it was fine time to stop playing and just lean on a column on the side of the stage. Her bassist had had enough and stormed out off the stage, followed by her drummer.
As the walk out music played, all that was was Marnie sitting on the stage with the guitar in her lap. She had that face of content that she had done nothing wrong, but everyone else had thought otherwise. She challenged her audience that night to see how far she could take herself till all would leave. I stayed there that night, with a handful of people asking the same question, "Welp, what do we do now?" It was a night that I would have never expected, a night where my favorite artist wanted me take the challenge of seeing her bomb while being bombed.
10 out of 10 stars!!!!
