Dandruff vs Dry scalp

The majority of my male clients see flakes falling down and automatic assume that they have dandruff and go straight to the shampoo aisle and grab some head and shoulders. But in many cases if not most it nothing but a case of dry scalp although both issues share the symptoms; such as an itchy scalp, or redness and irritation after shampooing, and of course the appearance of skin flakes that appear as white.

Dry Scalp is usually a result of the change in the temperature in one’s environment. Many will notice in the winter as it get colder the lack of moisture retained in the scalp, as it is exposed to a drier environment causing a reacts of peeling and flaking. The issue of dry scalp can simply be resolved by re-hydrating the scalp, with firstly increasing you water intake and eating water base foods  (ect watermelon  and pineapples). Exterior precautions  included limiting your shampoos; which with every use strip you hair of it nature oil. A simply solution is replacing every other wash with a simple rinse or oil cleaning, or applying dry shampoo.  If you wish not to skip shampooing because of your lifestyle habits, applying deep conditioners up to 15 to 30 minutes, leaves-ins, daily moisturizes or hair oils will bring balance to the hair shaft and scalp.

Dandruff on the other hand is not as simply as dry scalp, and is caused by a combination of factors. Dandruff isn’t  about the hair or the frequent occasions of which one washes his or her hair. The base of the problem is caused from the skin cells’ life cycle on the scalp progressing too fast caused by a fungus on the scalp; with the most common called malassezia. Whether you can simply solve dandruff with a drug store shampoo or if there is a need for a prescription shampoo from your dermatologist varies on the fungus on your scalp.  For each person dealing with dandruff is different. The most common drugstores shampoos to control dandruff is Head and Shoulder, Selsum Blue, Nizoral. When purchasing from professional brands look for key words such as Tea tree, Anti-dandruff, or Scalp sync(treatment).
