Asheville and Durham elope for 2014′s Marry Durham event

Three years ago, Durhamites in love with their hometown were able to wed it during the first Marry Durham event, a quirky cause that helpd raise funds for a variety of local nonprofit organizations. For the past two years they’ve also been able to renew their vows with the city.

There was no formal gathering this spring, however, because Durham eloped with its longtime paramour, Asheville.

Amongst the sea of white at the very first Marry Durham, there was this woman in her all black. I asked her what the black was all about and she kind of looked at me like I was a total idiot. Taking a chance at possible beat down, I asked if I could take her photo. At the time she was eating nachos and just posed with them. I very gently asked if she wanted to put them down out of the shot. She shrugged and simply put her bouquet in front of them as a shield. What a woman.
