The first time I saw Godard's "Breathless" it was at "The Circle" movie theatre on Pennsylvania Ave. in DC in the late 60's. For months I did emulate Belmondo's gesture of caressing his lower lip with his thumb. His recent death made me feel vulnerable and missing the wonder I experienced in watching some of his films. “This reissued CD has a facsimile of the front and back of the original 1963 vinyl release, featuring the insult dressed up as a compliment from Dizzy Gillespie: “It is remarkable to discover that an artist so far removed from the roots of Jazz as Algeria and France can adapt himself so magnificently, and can create from the soul so basically as Martial Solal.” Goodness me, they’ll be saying black people can’t play classical music next. . Having never heard of him before listening to this CD from a Paris-bought boxset of jazz classics I was astonished to find that he’s still alive. He’s 92 and still going strong, his last album Histoires Improvisées (Paroles et Musique) was released earlier this year. This is a fascinating exercise in improvisation, the kind of experimental random interpretation that Brian Eno would be lauded for: choose from out of a hat of 52 pieces of paper each containing a word relating to some aspect of his life, such as another musician (classical and jazz), one of the many film scores he arranged and performed, or a place or memory. Here we get a very personal and startling adept brief improvisational solo piece on the piano along with his spoken introduction. In French of course. My French isn’t good enough to follow much of it, but I love the concept and the man for ‘writing his autobiography’ in this way. Hats of to you sir.
