Mary Gregory Glass

Pieces known as early Mary Gregory glass began production in 1889 and continued through 1939. Production began again during WWII and continues to the present day. This beautiful glassware is distinctive in the enameled painting depicting Victorian children at play. Most often, the paintings are all white, although examples that include flesh tones of the face and arms are available. The glass colors range from clear to cranberry, red, green, blue, and citron yellow. Several glassmakers produced this enameled ware including Westmoreland Glass Company and more recently Fenton. The older pieces are mouth blown into molds and are much lighter weight. As with many historic objects there is a legend regarding the origination of this glass, which is where it received the Mary Gregory name.

               Mary Gregory was a painter for the Boston and Sandwich glass factory in Massachusetts from 1880 to 1884. The story or legend is that Mary Gregory was an unmarried woman that expressed her love for children by painting them on decorative glass. Although a touching story, this was untrue for several reasons. The first being the fact that she ended her tenure with Boston and Sandwich long before the glass appeared in the United States and second, there was no possible way she could have painted the number of pieces produced. In fact, what she actually painted for Boston and Sandwich were landscapes and winter scenes on lamps.

               Many Mary Gregory pieces originated in Europe although, as they became popular in the United States, several glass manufacturers began producing this decorative ware.
