You got to hand it to her, Mary Lai really does it all. Not only is the designer, but she's also the craftswoman, and occasional model for her emerging luxury handbag brand, MARYLAI NYC.
Mary's luxury line of handcrafted, leather handbags offer a modern twist of classic, sophisticated style and pull off pulling off a unique combination of both elegance and edge. Adding to her indie aesthetic and separating her from other contemporary designers is her return to the old fashioned approach to leather working- where every piece is created with attentive detailing and meticulous assembly.
But beyond the unmistakable designs and superior craftsmanship, Mary Lai works another hard-to-find feature into her designs. One that I find crucial to setting the brand apart, and that's functionality.
Everyone has that one bag they just keep coming back to. It's convenient, available, able to satisfy your daily needs, but not exactly the one you want to be seen in public with. The scarcity of functional bags might explain why moving on can be complicated. However, function and ease have a big influence in Mary Lai's approach to designing the perfect bag.
Living in New York City for the past 10 years, this NYC-based designer can sympathize with the unique demands of navigating the city. Mary says, "My experiences allow me to design better for this lifestyle." And she might have nailed it- crucial pockets in key places, combinations of long straps and short handles, and zippers that work as accents as well as shape and size control, are just a few of the thoughtful details applied with your convenience in mind.
